WAC commissioner Karl Benson told the Idaho Statesman on Wednesday that Boise State is struggling to schedule a BCS-conference opponent for 2011 even with the help (and exposure and money) of ESPN behind the effort.
The Broncos are not asking for a return game in Boise. Just one road game. And about 10 teams have turned the Broncos down, according to Benson.
"They're running into a situation where nobody will schedule them, nobody will take them," Benson told the Statesman's Chadd Cripe.
The story is starting to get some national attention as ESPN.com's Bruce Feldman has begun tweeting about it and a conversation he had with Benson. Feldman is characterizing the teams that refused the offer as "elite programs."
No one is naming names, but here are some teams that have openings in 2011, according to nationalchamps.net: Michigan, Oklahoma, Arizona, Texas A&M, Alabama (though the Crimson Tide plays at Penn State in 2011), Texas, Oklahoma State

Bingo!
c’mon, Texas! Cowboy up and shut these blue-turf wannabes up for good!
I would like the NCAA adopt a flexible schedule, where each team that finished in the Top 25, is randomly drawn to play two non-conference teams from the previous years Top 25 in the following season, one game at home, the other away.
nope. and the whole of it exposes the sham.
In fact, Florida has not played a non-conference game outside of the State of Florida, since they went up to Syracuse in 1991 (and got hammered, back when Syracuse actually had a football team).
A lot of the bigger name schools are loading up on the cup cakes to have the undefeated season. Sometimes it can backfire like when Auburn went undefeated but was left out of the BCS championship game because of its cupcake non-conference schedule. Of coruse one loss spells the end of any realistic hope of BCS championship. If I was Boise State just keep looking or how about scheduling TCU or Utah.
Jerry Jones seems big on hosting college football at Jerry’s World. Supposedly Arkansas and A&M got $5 million a piece for playing a game there. Perhaps Jerry can get BSU to play A&M for another big payday.
Boise State is the real deal. I think they could take anyone in the top 25, but florida, Bama and texas would be tough. Its sad to see such a good team get so little respect.
You think Oregon would like to have a “do over” in scheduling Boise State this year?
They’re Oregon’s only loss, I think.
I follow FCS (IAA) football much more closely. There’s a playoff system, and my alma mater is just about to clinch a spot, if they can win this weekend.
The SEC teams don’t want another tough game because the conference schedule is very tough. With three top ten teams this year in the conference, and a conference championship game, they have plenty of competition. I guess the same can be said of the Big 12 and others. Still, I would like to see Boise play another legitimate team each year. They’ve earned it.
Not sure about this, but could it be the risk of losing could be costly and a win against a non-BCS team would not hold as much weight.
The BCS is a racket
The ENTIRE NCAA is a racket worthy of a RICO trial.
Bama has scheduled “non-cupcake” out of conference games for years. This year our first game was Va Tech, last year Clemson, a few years back we exchanged home/away games with the Sooners. I think our deal with Penn St starts next year, with a repeat in 2011. Playing easy teams has its drawbacks too.
the NCAA needs to take scheduling away from the individual schools and write them on the basis of some sort of competitive balance. If I see one more BCS Top 10 team playing Kutztown State, Howard or Villanova in September I’m gonna puke
