When I interviewed director Roland Emmerich a few months ago about his upcoming disaster flick "2012," the first question I asked was, "Why do you like killing the world?" His response: "It makes for a good story."
Over the past fifteen years, Emmerich has crafted some great tales about global doom, featuring some spectacular scenes of destruction. He had aliens zap the White House in "Independence Day," he let a massive lizard flatten New York City in "Godzilla," and he sent killer tornadoes through downtown Los Angeles in "The Day After Tomorrow."
For "2012," Emmerich set his sites on destroying the some biggest landmarks around the world, from Rome to Rio. But there's one place that Emmerich wanted to demolish but didn't: the Kaaba, the cube-shaped structure located in the center of Mecca. ..
"Well, I wanted to do that, I have to admit," the filmmaker told scifiwire.com. "But my co-writer Harald [Kloser] said, 'I will not have a fatwa on my head because of a movie.' And he was right."
Traditionally, a fatwa has meant religious opinion by an Islamic scholar or imam. The term has gained currency in the West after Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini issued a death sentence in the form of a fatwa against British author Salman Rushdie for alleged blasphemies in his book "The Satanic Verses" in 1989. As a result, the Indian-born writer was forced into hiding for most of the '90s.
Emmerich has no qualms about wrecking other major landmarks, however. The massive dome of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican rolls on top of a crowd of churchgoers. The huge Christ the Redeemer statue that looms over Rio de Janeiro disintegrates. And, of course, the White House gets crushed when a wave drops the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy on top of it.

Rio's Christ the Redeemer statue disintegrates ..
the WH is decimated by a hugh wave and aircraft carrier ..
.. but the Kabba is off limits..
Need canned goods.
If the Kabba is explicitly saved in the movie, that’s one thing. If the whole Earth is destroyed, then it’s not a big deal.
Hollywood is tough when it comes to Christianity but never when it comes to Islam.
Er, not to be picky, but I thought the Kaabah was in Mecca?
Yup, already asked mod to correct it. :-)
he let a massive lizard flatten New York City in "Godzilla," ....terrible movie, worse than any of the other Japanese Giant Monster Pics, that were all pretty bad in their own right.
and he sent killer tornadoes through downtown Los Angeles in "The Day After Tomorrow." ....A movie so bad that people in my theater were laughing at it, but not at the funny parts. It was the kind of movie that pretentiously drones on, while people roll their eyes and check their watches, or just walk out of the theater to try and find something better to do.
I'm seeing a trend here. And it doesn't portend anything good for 2012. Or, for the movie. :-)
I wonder how that sign outside of Rochester fared — wouldn’t want them gun-happy Mormons going bananas, ya know.
The story doesn’t say that the kaaba isn’t destroyed. They just don’t show it being destroyed. I don’t blame them...it’s not worth having some animal put a price on your head.
>>Er, not to be picky, but I thought the Kaabah was in Mecca?<<
If the filmmaker had any guts, he would have had an earthquake relocate it...
That's cool, I just wanted to make sure the missiles were pointed at the right place!

Doesn't that make the title of this article invalid? Did the movie say all the world was destroyed except Mecca/Islam?
Or does it not show the destruction of it? Or does it show the destruction of Jerusalem? Or imply so?
Mixing movies and end of the world scenarios, is not a good idea when specific to religious beliefs. MO
God help us in our day, in Jesus name, amen.
Doesn’t matter. It’s just a movie. In reality, it is up to G-d to decide what to destroy and what to keep. And we may be up for some surprises there.
10 Failed Doomsday Predictions

With the upcoming disaster film “2012” and the current hype about Mayan calendars and doomsday predictions, it seems like a good time to put such notions in context.
Most prophets of doom come from a religious perspective, though the secular crowd has caused its share of scares as well. One thing the doomsday scenarios tend to share in common: They don’t come to pass.
Here are 10 that didn’t pan out, so far:

Here's what I propose: Privately financed "outtakes" of this movie that we can add to our privately purchased and viewed versions of the DVD, in the same format as the original 2012. This would enhance enormously the enjoyment of viewing the film, and it would give the Muslim Mass Murderers apoplexy.
Not having seen the movie, I don't know how long each scene is for the destruction of the Vatican, the Eifel Tower, New York, DC and all the other high profile sites that are already in the movie, but I am sure that they are more than a couple of minutes each.
I figure 10-15 minutes total of additional film would suffice. By subscription, 10,000 people each contributing $100 could swing the deal. I would subscribe. Additional Institutional contributions are not out of the question.
My suggestions for additions:
1. Mecca and Medina -- most people know the significance of these two and, if they don't, they should.
2. Mashad --- "The burial places and shrines for all twelve of the imams revered by the Twelver Shia Muslims.
3.Qom --- The burial places of numerous Shahs
4. Baghdad, Teheran, Damascus and Aman.
To make things clear, Hebron and Jerusalem's Dome of the Rock are not among them because they are -and were for 800 years before islam was invented, Judeo-Christian holy sites. Those get plenty of coverage from the weenie producer and director in the theatrical release.
That would be so cool!
Does the movie have any stand up and cheer momments in the film, or do all the dems in congress survive?
Can we nickname Roland “Ron Coward”?!!
He says he’s against organized religion. And then he submits to the most lethal sect.
