Eye-gouging is considered such a foul, filthy act that its banned by even our most blatantly combative exercises, including mixed martial arts and pro wrestling.
Sheriff Urban Meyer of the Gainesville PD isnt as concerned, apparently.
Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes was caught on film purposefully jamming his fingers through the facemask of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey on Saturday in an effort to rip at Ealeys eyes.
It was about as ugly and unbecoming of a play as there is in football.
For the act, Meyer will bench his star linebacker for the first half of the Gators game against Vanderbilt.
Repeat: one half. That penalty isnt a joke, although the man dishing it out is acting like one.

That will teach him Urban!
what is Williams punishment? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cERuyek02wA
Crips and Bloods without the weapons...Sparks is NFL material!
I played organized football from age 6-18. I played semi-organized football every chance I could get up until the age of 30.
On the bottom of piles, there was punching and nut pulling, but NEVER did you try to blind someone.
This goes beyond the pale. F**KIN TRYING TO BLIND SOMEONE deserves MUCH more than suspension for HALF A F##KING GAME!!!
Urban is very much a players coach especially his virgin quarterback ie; flys with Tebow, spends nights with Tebow in hospital, etc....
Urban is all about winning at all costs.
Now, for the contrary arguement. What do we expect Urban to do? What’s fair? I think sitting out for half a game is fair enough.
Wasn’t that Ealey that ripped Spike helmet off? I do not condone that type of behavior, but I am sure it was pay back. Do a search on youtube of that late hit on Tebow that did not get flagged.
Huh, huh, he listed pro-wrestling like it was a real sport...LOLOLOL
If the officials would have spotted it the penalty would have included an ejection from the game, which would have been longer than his punishment is now.
LeGarrette Blount got suspended for the season just for throwing a punch, he wasn't trying to maim anyone.
Well, LaGarrette Blount of Oregon was suspended for the season for this punch of a Boise State player.
That punch was a far less serious act then trying to poke some one's eye out in the scrum.
What should Urban Myer do?
He should look at himself in the mirror and ask himself if that level of punishment is really sending the right message to his players and if winning is really worth that price. He might also consider what he thinks the punishment should be if an opponent had done that to Tebow.
Good point!
Late hits are part of the game, happens in every game, though the one on Tebow was especially cheap and late.
Do you really think that is on the same level as sticking your fingers into a guys eyes while he is helpless? Look at the video again and tell me that they were on theme level.
I agree with your analysis. The eyes are the most vulnerable body parts. A punch is a punch. Getting an eye gouged out is different.
That said. Urban is all about the championship and insulating his players.
What if it happened to Tebow??? You know the answer to that!! LOL..
I would have favored a 1-3 game suspension.
I thought the penalty was excessive too. The “punch” happened after the play and took on a life of its own. Almost turning into a “Battery”. A gouge during a play is much easier to conceal although more dangerous and dirty.
Come on man. Don't joke the boy for trying to lead a clean life. That aside I hate the gators.
