The cop was a mentally challenged jerk. Anyone who would make this big an issue out of an 80 year old lady having a yard sale (and why in the hell should anyone need a permit to do so?) has big time anger and control issues. Another bully in uniform.

The small town where I live in Tennessee, put in the same thing. Limit of 2 garage sales per year. You have to get a permit to put up signs and you have to buy your signs from the city.
Dad bought the permits, and had a sale. And dang it if the city didn’t misfile the paperwork and pulled up his signs anyway. They offered him two free signs after the garage sale was a bust.
We got 3/5’ths of the city council thrown out at the last election and the garage sale law was rescinded.

I dare say she’ll be happier (and freer) in Tennessee.

How is New Jersey still part of this Land of the Free and Home of the Brave?

Whenever there is a hint of a problem of this kind, you always want to have several people handy with video cameras, even the telephone kind. Both the FBI and the DEA are quietly pushing local police forces to frequently test for steroids. Unexplained instances of police officers losing emotional control without provocation are not uncommon. But without video evidence, most people dismiss such instances, because they can't imagine officers spontaneously going off like that.

Welcome to the Obmanation.
New Jersey fits right in.
I live in a town called Rule, and we do not have any. And we get along fine.

I don’t have a problem with the police upholding the law, that’s what they are supposed to do. Now, passing a law that directly infringes on the rights of the homeowner on their own property to hold a couple dang yard sales I do have an issue with.

Anyone who knows Jersey cops knows exactly who to believe here.

Requiring a permit to have a Garage Sale? Wow, serfs had it better than citizens of NJ.
To: BGHater
Did cops go too far busting up improper yard sale? Yes, but the "too far" line was already crossed as soon as it was decided that any person in America needs their government's permission to sell magazine racks and Hummel figurines.

While I would agree that the police handled it poorly the real bad guys in this story were never named. They would be the town council or whoever came up with such a ‘law’. Then again the brain dead electorate of NJ keep on voting against their best interest when they pull the ‘D’ lever. NJ is so screwed up and everyone is surprised.

Slaves is right. When people go along to get along for too long, this is what happens. Too many yard sales in a year? What the freaking crap is going on in the Country?
