It's deflating news for the sheriff at the center of the investigation into the Colorado balloon hoax.
The Boulder County district attorney announced Wednesday that he would personally investigate allegations that Larimer County Sheriff John Alderden improperly conducted his probe into the alleged balloon hoax committed by the Heene family.
A lawyer for Richard Heene wrote a letter to the Larimer County district attorney on Monday, accusing Alderden of breaking a Colorado law that prevents officials from publically disclosing information in a case involving charges of child neglect

his lawyer is the same a$$hole who represented ward churchill.
Thanks for the info. No wonder!
And Sheriff Alderden is a conservative who's stepped on liberal toes many times. It disgusts me that he's under investigation for doing his job.
Balloon Boy Dad believes Sheriff violated Law

I care what that schmoe thinks.
Guilty of stating the obvious.
What authority does the Boulder County DA have over the Larimer County sherriff?
When your a Lib, does something like that matter?
CA....
Here we go again. Boulder county is akin to the laughing stock that is the NJ court system.
I don’t know why the Larimer County DA is asking the Boulder County DA to handle the investigation (in case of conflict of interest later). Why not choose Jefferson or Weld County, which are a bit more reasonable?
Very typical lawyer krep. No lasting effect.
"Garnett is handling the outside review at the request of the Larimer County district attorney's office, which would have to try the case if the sheriff is charged with any criminal wrongdoing, the Ft. Collins Coloradoan reports."
Sounds like just a formality. This lawyer alleged in writing that the sheriff violated some law, and an “investigation” had to be opened. This whole thing was started by the father, who called the media in addition to 911, and who lied continually to officials for quite a long time until the boy turned up. It wasn’t the sheriff’s idea to put this story in the media — the father put it there, and encouraged officials to involve the media in the phony search for his son who he knew full well was safe at home.
The limited statements the sheriff made or authorized that could be construed as violating any privacy laws were aimed at reassuring the alarmed public that the boys were being monitored and that the mother had an opportunity to get them and herself out of the father’s presence and control if she wished to. That offer is routine, and the fact that she hadn’t accepted it was made evident by her and her husband’s subsequent media contacts — the sheriff was simply stating the obvious when he said the offer had been made and that she’d declined.
The father and mother also hauled the boy and his brothers to TV interviews, where the whole world could see that the child was throwing up either from the psychological stress they were putting him under, or from illness that his father would not allow to interfere with media opportunities. Private information released or authorized by the sheriff was an insignificant crumb compared to what the father, with the mother’s cooperation and participation, insisted on telling and showing via the media.
