In honor of Halloween, I have assembled two lists. One holds a ranking of the ten best slashers of all time. While these characters were awesome, that does not necessarily mean that any of their respective movies were any good. So my other list looks solely at the movies, and which come in tops. The list of the best slashers will be published tomorrow (Saturday) on hometownstation.com. Today though, we'll take a stab (please pardon the pun I know it's bad) at identifying the ten best horrors movies...ever.
One of my favorites is Dario Argento’s “Suspiria”.
Change that to Nightmare on Elm Street. (Brain was thinking Freddy Krueger, but fingers were thinking Jason).
The Shining with Jack Nicholson’s creepy performance had me sleeping with a nightlite for a week after seeing it.
The crystal skull aliens in the last Indiana Jones movie, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, were pretty creepy.
Perfume-Story of a Serial Killer, starring Alan Rickman and Dustin Hoffman, European production with German director, made in 2006, a production that The Guardian said most in the industry predicted would never get made because it was too controversial. It ran thru three prior directors incl. Ridley Scott. Young man in 1800-era France kills young women to capture their scent. I found it vile yet thought-provoking, and pretty scary.
The Others with Nicole Kidman was genuinely scary. Same premise as that movie with the line, I see dead people.
Not on mine. I prefer The EXERCISIST!
The Hitcher, both the original with Rutger Hauer and C. Thomas Howell from 1986, and the recent remake with Sean Bean.

Renfield ‘Mander
Absolutely.
Coolest.
Movie.
Ever.
heh heh heh, THANK GAWD they haven’t made it into a movie yet.
The Dunwich Horror

“Donnie Darko”.

And along that same quantum line, “The Butterfly Effect".
Wow!I could have posted the same list. Especially The Legend of Hill House (The Haunting original). That movie still spooks me.
I haven’t read this whole Halloween thread, but has anybody mentioned Wait Until Dark?
Hey, I lived on the water when it came out, in an area with everything from Osprey to Great Blue Heron and Egrets down to little peepers and a gazillion seagulls. I still watch the sky more than most folks (although admittedly for the weather).
The Shining
The real monster is within, etc.
The Silence of the Lambs
More monster, but sooo rational and calm.
Psycho
Because true monsters cover their tracks...
28 Days Later
Because the monster might be contagious
Coma
just lie back and relax...you won't feel a thing.
The Andromeda Strain The first version, not the new one.
'Captain Tripps' is an ET.
The Stand
Not that I found it so horrifying, but then we all view ourselves as survivors of the epidemic...and on our way to Mother Abigail's place.
One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest
Because if you aren't really crazy, that can be fixed...
Cyclops: The Forbin Project
Because once it is hooked together and aware, there will be no place to go.
Honorable mentions..
Wayne's World
No, not the movie itself, but its effect:
I hadn't heard the word "dude" so often since a friend's ranch quit taking summer boarders, and the image conjured up by a "Babe-raham Lincoln" would wake you up in a cold sweat if you tried to transpose his visage on an attractive female body...
An Inconvenient Truth
Again, for effect.
Not since Triumph of the Will has one movie had so many malevolent and dangerously misguided people marching in lockstep.
“Mysery” is no horror show.
Talking about skeery movies... heres another.
Communion.
