When upgrading, it’s usually best to back up all files and perform a clean install of the new OS.

My w7 upgrade shipped this morning so I'll have it in a couple days. I have plenty of excess disk space to fully backup and install clean but I'm not sure whether or not it's worth the effort (I back up my info already.)

Any stories of real world experience going from Vista x64 to w7 x64 would also be appreciated here.

I did a clean install to convert from V64 to 7/64.

I find that ALL Windows machines benefit greatly from periodic clean installs.

I have a daily backup of files anyway, so after doing a clean install, downloading all the updated/ drivers/ getting back on my home network AND THEN reloading all my personal files ... everything worked GREAT. It DID take me 6 hours on the clock. I wasn’t glued to my desk the whole time, but it occupied an entire Sunday afternoon

Vista needs to die. trust me. You’ll like 7 / 64

I work in IT - new work XPS 1340 shipped w/XPhome SP3 - clean installed to Win 7 64 bit. Never bothered installing Vista on this laptop - memory hog, HD hog, Veesta just plain stinks. Windows 7 is a much better OS compared to Vista 32 or 64 bit.

Last week, ordered my free copy of Win 7 for home Dell laptop which arrived Oct 1 - can't wait to get that one off of Vista Business 32bit.

I WILL do a clean install to Win 7 - best way to go - upgrades don't always install everything cleanly over the existing OS - and have many years of experience with all the flavors of Windows OSs.

I just say NO to the upgrade option.
