For a myriad of reasons, I have spent the last few months watching a movie most every weeknight. I have finally gotten my moneys worth from my Netflix account.
But, lately I have had trouble finding movies I think I will like. I scour Netflix and am having a hard time finding movies that interest me, though I know they are out there.
My interest runs from war movies to action flicks to quirky indy films to foreign art things.
Some of my favorite movies I have seen the past few months are Defiance, all of the Sean Connery Bond films, Sleeper, The Right Stuff, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Riding Giants, a Hard Days Night, and a few foreign artsy films whose names I dont recall.
By far my favorite movie I have seen lately is Everything is Illuminated.
I have no interest in horror flicks, romance movies, teen gross out flicks or most movies made in the 1960s.
Could anyone be so kind as to suggest a good movie or two?
Thanks
I enjoyed The Patriot this weekend
I love that movie but you're absolutely right....it requires a certain mindset and not everyone will love it.
My old CRT TV went bad this spring so I picked up a nice 37” 1080p from Wally World for less than what I paid for the TV that blew out.
Thanks, I’ll check it out.
Some others to consider from the recent GI Film Festival:
The G.I. Film Festival and Gary Sinise: Supporting Our Troops
I forgot about that one. I saw it about a month ago. Very intelligent film made with a shoestring budget.
The Hunt for Red October
Anchorman
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
The 40 Year Old Virgin
Bad Lieutenant
WWII:
The Last Metro (Le Dernier Metro)
Lucie Aubrac (if you can find it!)
Crime:
Thieves (Les Voleurs)
Ronin
Généalogies d’un Crime (Genealogies of a Crime)
Comedy:
Les Visiteurs (hilarious time-traveling French farce)
Years ago I had rented that tape so often, the video store gave me a brand new copy. :)
Ping. Lots of good suggestions here, a few we may have missed. :-)
Saw it a few months ago. Loved it.
Wow, Ice Pirates. I was 10 years old at the time, and it’s sitll the only movie I ever walked out on at a theater.

The Third Man w/ Joseph Cotton and Orson Welles
The Man Who Knew Too Much w/ James Stewart and Doris Day
The Bridge on the River Kwai w/ Alec Guinness and William Holden
Das Boot w/ Jurgen Prochnow (German version)
The Ladykillers w/ Alec Guinness and Peter Sellers
The Day of the Jackal w/ Edward Fox (original)
Gran Torino w/ Clint Eastwood (as mentioned by others, a pretty good contemporary movie)
Hope this helps.
If you haven't seen Goodbye, Lenin! yet I can't recommend it highly enough. One of those movies that will make you laugh and also cry. And Yann Tiersen's soundtrack is my favorite of any movie.
Are you into musicals?
Best rock musical: The Girl Can’t Help It
Best variety musical: Hollywood Revue of 1929
Best choreography: Golddiggers of 1933
The ending was so perfect. Damn shame the main actor passed away shortly after the movie had finished. He probably was even sick during the filming.
My two favs are Slingblade and Christmas Vacation. :)
We are loving the DangerMan series, known in the US as Secret Agent Man. Early James Bond stuff, set all over the world, fighting bad Communists. There is also a very good series on Netflix — Battlefield Britain — where they go to Hastings/ replay the battle. Excellent. One series where the guy traces Alexander the Great’s travels — In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great/ Michael Woods. He also goes to Troy/ traces the Odyssey, etc. This is streaming NetFlix.
I just saw the promo.I think that Radio Caroline reached
Germany where I was stationed? Although,I remember listening
to Radio Luxembourg.
