I had to put-down Schmeckel Kitty today. He was a remarkably sweet friend to me for 13 years. He had tough luck. We found him nearly starved to death in 1997 at a roadside stand. He looked like a kitten, all bones. We brought him home, cleaned him up, and he became the sweetest, most loving kitty. He had a lot of bumps along the way. His bowel was removed in 2000. We saved him. He was hit by a car in 2006 and lost a rear leg plus got a herniated diaphragm. We saved him. Early this year he went into kidney failure and after some intensive care, we saved him again. He was on several meds plus daily hydration and was doing well until about five days ago. He got really sick. A trip to the vet today showed he was in total kidney failure and was badly anemic. His kidneys finally gave out, but not his great heart. He couldn't walk this AM so we went to the vet where I got the terrible news. He just wore out. But even as I held him and the vet gave him his final injection, he purred and kissed me. Damn. So hard to write this. Hard to see the keyboard.
So he's gone over the Rainbow Bridge. He leaves a hole in my heart and a huge empty space in the house. I promised him I wouldn't let him suffer and I kept my word.
Rest in Peace, Little Schmeckel. 1996 - 2009.
God bless you for taking such great care of him for so many years.
I’m so sorry.
Hi there,
I am sorry about your loss. I just lost my cat Midnight a few weeks ago. Prayers to you and your family. I am sure that Midnight and all of my and my friend’s cats will be up there to welcome him to his new home.

My heart is breaking for you because I know what faithful companions our furry friends are. You did what you believed was best for your baby. Remember the love and the ‘kitty’ kisses.
Megan, Tigger and McIntosh reminds me a lot like Frankie, Joel and Jack.
I miss those guys....
I am so sorry, pabianice. Losing a pet is so hard, I know from experience.
I’m glad you didn’t allow your kitty to suffer.
A big (((cyber hug))) to comfort you.

Been there, done that. My heart breaks for you.
My baby was going downhill and suffering, and it was a horrible decision to make. At least I was able to hold him in his final moments and be there for him always.
I am so sorry for your loss.
What a wonderful home you gave him.
Our Lord will reward you for the love you gave him.
Prayers for you.
You made your kitty’s life the best you could, and he repaid you, as they do, many times over in cat love.
I would like to think you will find your kitty waiting for you someday at the bridge. I like to believe that all of the kitties and mares I have loved will be waiting for me.
They are only with us for what seems like such a short time, yet they give us so much love we never forget them. I hope you take comfort in knowing you gave one of God’s little critters a lifetime of love, care and happiness. Imagine if you had never seen him. You saved him from a short and painful life and he in return gave you his unconditional love.
I pray God gives you peace and comfort. You are such good people to care so much for a lost little guy. I hope you continue to share that love with all those God allows into your lives. They are truly gifts.
Hyperthyroidism in cats:
Last year, my 15 year old hyperthyroid cat looked like greasy skin and bones, and I was told that I could give him pills or a one-time radioactive iodine treatment. I asked if most cats looked as terrible as mine did when they came in, and was told most looked WORSE. I opted for the iodine treatment. A year later, he is still with me, a little thin, but his coat looks good.
(He has been through a lot. For several years, I gave him insulin by injection twice daily until switching to an all-meat diet to control diabetes.)
There are several outfits that do this kind of treatment, but this is the one I used:
You are a good one.
We miss all of our past kitties - It is always hard to make the final decision.
You did the right thing.
Peace be with you.
For at least the next six months you’ll think you just saw him out of the corner of your eye, and it will hurt all over again. But, it will finally get better, I promise you because I’ve been there.
I’m so sorry.
I am so sorry. It’s hard to lose your friend.
I was thinking the same thing- my recently departed kitty looked just like this, too. She was 15.
Remember that Schmeckie’s spirit is watching over you now, and desperately wanting you to be happy again. Try to cheer him up.
