Unemployed nephew too good for garbage collection
self | 10/25/09 | self

It gets better. Said unemployeed nephew showed up at our door just over a week ago, after we didn't respond to his email asking if he could come and stay with us while he looked for a job. He drove nearly 1000 miles expecting us to let him sleep in his truck parked on our driveway. Of course, he had a sob story. After a few days of being gone for 2-3 hours each, he's says he's now found a job...we'll see. He's been careful not to expect us to provide coffee, meals, laundry, gas for his truck, etc.

During a discussion with my nephew, a 30-something unemployed laborer, about how we pay to dispose of our trash, he emphatically stated that he would never work collecting garbage, especially not in the summer. The response came automatically without hesitation from my husband: it seems the safety net and minimum wage is too high in our country if we can't find people to do jobs like that. My nephew didn't say anything after that, but I'm sure the truth hurts, especially when it comes from his favourite uncle.

My husband went on our tenants property to find out if they were even living there. He didn’t see a reason to get the sheriff involved if they already bailed on the rental property. When he knocked on the door, it came open. He stuck his head in and said “Hello?” A big whiff of pot hit him in the face. He left realizing he would have to evict them anyway.

So a few days later, this little punk who rented the house had a dad who got a lawyer and took a WARRANT out for Criminal Trespass and the presense of pot was not confirmed by husband smelling... it was the most ridiculous thing ever.

From then on, we just evict an empty house. Luckily the judge threw out the stupid charge.

Yep, my brother in law’s company dropped their health insurance effective Oct, 1 without compensating them for what they saved in not paying for half of the group policy. So they essentially got a pay cut and Cobra is triple what the plan was costing THE COMPANY (meaning six times what my BIL would have to pay)

It’s getting rough out there. He’s had 25 years of heavy equipment experience. He was actually a little excited back in January with the news telling him that Obama’s stimulus would be used on roads and bridges. He’s recognized the news and Obama for what they are now.

I'm sorry to hear of your family's employment situation.

Pardon my own cynicism, but I see the "why don't these damned unemployed people get a job" threads often enough that I am a bit sensitive.

Well said. I have done the manual labor and other low level stuff to survive. As long as the bills are paid, lights are on, and food is available I guess is what matters at the end of the day.

Is there a reason your nephew can’t sleep in house?

Sometimes it's better for the young man that he doesn't. There's no serious harm that comes from sleeping in your vehicle, but it does serve as a constant reminder that it's expected that he shape up and get a job - you know, start being responsible for himself and all.

It is for reasons like that I will never get involved in rental property.

When things are this bad in the economy my usual tough love with relatives is different in this depression.

I figure we might have to team up to muddle through this phase of American life and we bought property like that just in case. That is what families are for - the real safety net. We don’t have any blood suckers, and if we did, I would treat them differently.

I’ll help people in my family who need it to get over this hump in the economy. As long as I have this property, my relatives won’t be on the streets or in the driveway... white collar or blue collar...no matter to me. They were all economically independent before the depression.

Thank you for replying. I understand how frustrating the situation is for people who want to work, but can't find a job. My frustration is with a 30 year-old guy with a wife and six kids and minimal skills who doesn't seem to understand it's his duty to feed his family, even if it means he's gotta suck it up and work with garbage.

It’s the sense of entitlement, driving 1000+ miles without receiving any approval of him being here. Just showing up expecting to stay with us and then announcing there are some jobs he just won’t do.

That is scary as hell about your children. I am sorry for them. Sometimes I need to have my whine about no pay increase put into perspective. We are in tough times.

Uh, at that age they should be wiping their own butts!

7 and 4.5? No way would I ever wipe the butt of a 7 year old unless he was disabled.

Have him stand on your front lawn next garbage day—maybe they’ll haul him away.

No good deed goes unpunished. I bet over 60% of people who help out another person end up getting screwed in return for their help. I let a friend and his family move into a house I owned. I let them stay rent free so they could save money. A year went by and I gave them three months to move out because I had to move in to a bigger house when my second child was born. I couldn't believe they were mad at me for wanting to move back into my house. They destroyed my carpet by tracking mud into the house when they moved. I was so disgusted with them that I ended the ten year friendship that day.

I feel for your kids. During our 20 years of marriage, we’ve never known job security. I know that nearly every day, I could receive that call saying that we no longer have a job. I don’t dwell on it, but it’s always in the back of my mind. It’s not a comfortable way to live, always wondering if that little extra spending money should be saved “just in case”.

I pray “that day” never comes for your kids.

As the wise old Yiddish proverb syas:

“Mensch tracht,

“Man plans,

Thak you.

I have a feeling it is going to get much worse.

This is a depression, not a recession.

Barack Obama is Herbert Hoover.

Was he offered a trash pick up job he refused to take or did he just express the VERY sane truth that the last job he would want is trash picking? It is the last job I would want for myself as well, although if that was all that came up for me, I would do it. Did he show up because he had no where else to go or because he thought your area would be best for job hunting?

I think we have different ideas of family and that is common these days.

That came out wrong. The little one still needs his butt wiped. The seven year old is fine. We're working on it. He's got kind of a big butt for his age and it's hard for him to reach inside.
