Shocking: Copper Theft Gone Wrong
NBC Bay Area ^ | 10/22/09 | LORI PREUITT

Posted on 10/23/2009 12:15:21 PM PDT by nickcarraway

The mean-spirited would call it Darwinism at work. A suspected thief got the shock of his life after apparently trying to steal copper.

The man is in a Northern California burn unit after his alleged robbery attempt when horribly wrong. Police were tipped to the crime by a power outage. Soon after the power went out someone called the Rodeo Fire Department to report a telephone pole fire.

As crews responded to the fire, they noticed a man walking down the street suffering from visible burns.

Investigators with the East Bay Regional Parks District say they think the man was trying to steal copper and accidental cut through a live line.

"In the rural areas of Contra Costa County, there is a theft of copper issue that has surfaced since the recession has begun. I would say it's dangerous and it's also theft," Dave Davidson with the park department.

A helicopter airlifted the victim/suspect to the UC Davis Burn Center. Doctors say he has second and third degree burns.

They hope to get more information after they interview the victim/suspect.

It’s good that you’re not insulating him from his actions.

Perhaps this case will be appealed to the circuit court.

The thief’s parents never taught him to conduct himself appropriately ... otherwise he would have resisted this temptation.

On the other hand, he did reach his potential. Unfortunately, it does seem to have phased him.

“As crews responded to the fire, they noticed a man walking down the street suffering from visible burns. “

This sounds suspiciously like the beginning of a “Monty Python Flying Circus” episode......

ITsss!

You shouldn’t be having pun at his expense.

Who are you calling "mean-spirited?"

"The thief’s parents never taught him to conduct himself appropriately"

Oh, I don't know.

It sounds like he conducted fairly well.

View of the Sunnyside Rail Yard, from the Queens Boulevard Overpass

Dunno, but I do remember a story about 30 years ago, where a little kid, about seven, was killed when he peed off the Queens Boulevard overpass on to the Sunnyside rail yard. Those wires really are high voltage. Seems the "juice" arced up the golden stream and zapped him right where it hurt.

RIP

Had one of these in my area recently. The guy was cutting grounds out of a substation and wound up being electrocuted. When rescue got there they said he was stuck to the transformer and on fire. His GF attempted to free him by crashing her car thru the fence which only resulted in (more) damage to the electric company’s equipment. It sad to be stuck on stupid...very sad indeed.

Another example of how our schools are failing.

The thief or the horridly incompetent writer and/or editors of this bit of "news"?
