'NCIS' rides a wave of popularity
LA Times ^ | 10/19/2009 | Maria Elena Fernandez

Even though Robi Boscarino lives a world away, the 17-year-old Australian still manages to tune into CBS' "NCIS" seven nights a week. Earlier this month, the Perth resident visited the hit crime procedural's sound stages in Valencia and caught his favorite character, DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly), in action.

"Back home, everybody likes him," said Boscarino, who has Hodgkin's lymphoma and whose big dream to visit the set was made possible by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. "He's one of the most popular TV actors, for sure. This is more than I expected, to be honest. I didn't expect him to be like he is in the character. He's very funny."

Boscarino is one of millions around the globe who has helped make the special agents of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service household names in such far-off places as France, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom and Sweden. And it seems like the United States has finally, and officially, caught on by making the show -- and its new spinoff "NCIS: Los Angeles," among the top scripted shows in prime time. Its seasonal averages, especially for an aging show and a newcomer that air back-to-back on a Tuesday night, are eye-popping: "NCIS" boasts 21 million, while "NCIS: Los Angeles," claims a robust 18 million.

"There are psychics all over town going, 'Didn't see that coming! Hard to call,' " Weatherly joked in his trailer, while eating a slice of cold pizza. "But it's a great feeling. It's like those movies about the racehorse that's not supposed to be -- we weren't bred in some Kentucky barn of some billionaire who has Arabian stallions. We're just a plow horse. But we run fast! It's one of those stories."

I had no idea it's this popular in other countries.

I walk past NCIS Washington every morning. Occasionally, I'll see a sad-looking midshipman standing out front with the usual gaggle of military lawyers.

All I can think is, "Man, whatever you did, your career is SO over."

NCIS is a good show but the spin-off, NCIS: LA is pretty lame.

I haven't been impressed, so far. But, I'm willing to give them time to "get in the groove". The original NCIS took a while for the characters to establish themselves.

I find the characters to be entertaining, but only after I "knew" them.

I think CBS is really trying to really milk this cow dry.

NCIS, and its parent show, JAG, are like meat and potatoes TV. Consistent, entertaining and with that elusive blend of drama and humor that seems to escape most other dramatic series on TV.
The stories all well written the cast seems to enjoy itself, and it never takes itself seriously; a rare thing in a show running for years. Perhaps the best barometer of its success is than none of the actors --- none, as in zero-- has developed the megalomania so common in tinier minds who confound entertainment popularity with social and political wisdom: no political verbal diarrhea.

The success of the formula speaks for itself.

The jury is still out on the LA spinoff, only time will tell. The original NCIS has been among the top 5 must-see shows for me since it began, in 1995. Why? It's entertaining, pure and simple.

I agree about the LA version. We watch something else during that hour. The original is good, and keeps getting better.

I've tried to watch CSI Miami. But watching that tilted head Caruso makes my neck hurt. End up wanting the bad guys to strangle the humorless bastard.

You and me both. I caught some of the earlier episodes, and Caruso’s doing fine acting-wise, IMO. Then, somewhere along the line...

WAY oversaturated colors in the visuals,

pacing as fast as molasses in January, and...

OVERACTING!

I blame the direction. This part of the franchise is a self-parody.

i was rally disappointed when the series replaced the female team lead who was in the ncis 2-parter.
