Well, here it is. I was looking for a second car, just an around town beater. Finally thought I found a half decent 95 grand am for 1500. High miles, not attractive but new inspection and new tires. It ran well. They guy at the little lot was sooo nice. Introduced me to his wife. Had the wife bring out their 9 mo. old little girl. Seemed like the just your average good joe. Well, I made an offer of 1300. and he agreed. Paid 1100. cash and the rest in check. (cont. below)

Where are you located?

I hope your situation works out, if it doesn't and you're anywhere near Las Vegas, I have a clean 97 T-Bird Coupe, just turned 100K....and yes it has brand new tires too!!

Yeah,, that’s great isn’t it. Well, we live and learn. Never too old to learn a good lesson, are we. It was 1100. in cash and a 200. check to make up the difference plus a 186. check for taxes and tags. I wrote the the tax check “for taxes and tags.”

I was in Key West, FL a few years ago, in a t-shirt shop. Bought about $75.00 worth of stuff. The clerks were very talkative friendly, moving around, etc. I signed the credit car receipt and left. I discovered a few minutes later the receipt was for almost 2000. I went to the store and of course the guys were gone and the current clerk had no idea (of course) what I was telling him. Eventually after making many phone calls to the city, I got a guy that was very non-chalant and acted as if it happen all the time—IT DID I later found. He made them issue a refund, and I never heard from them again.

Losing the $200 check is the least of it.

You said he worked at a lot. That's far different than had it been a private party. Considering his existing legal problems, would he want you filing a complaint against him? Would he want you picketing his lot and sharing your story with other potential customers?

You should NEVER have left there w/o a bill of sale. But you already know that. There is hope, though. He may not want to bring more trouble his way. Good luck.

You know, Jesus didn’t just want us all to go to church and sit in the pews, this may be your chance to help the kid, the wife, or all of them, I am thinking because they do have custody of the child, the investigation is not as a conviction, and you said “There were several other people in his place of business” says he still does work. Have a little faith, and go work it out tomorrow. God never gives us more than we can handle, may God Bless you and give you a square deal

Go to the dealership and pick up the car....do not cancel the check until after you’re abosulutely sure he will not hand the car over.

You may have to threaten to call the cops while you are at his office. Any problems, call them and file a report.....don’t hesitate....

For a Theft by Taking charge his attorney would advise him to give you a $1500 car...it ain’t worth the rap or the attorney time...

Oh, yeh, I re-read it. FreeMike paid the other $1100 in cash. Without a bill of sale, he might not have the VIN. I wonder if the guy used his real name and if he lived at the place where the "sale" occurred.

Show up early and with friends. Either get your car or your money.

The fact that you wrote on the check for taxes and tags might be some evidence of what you paid him. Presumably you could calculate the price from that. But he’ll no doubt say he never got the rest. It’s a small claims case. Not worth hiring a lawyer.

If you go back over and he’s tried to switch things off on you, demand that he makes it right or give you your money back. If he does not give it to you, call 911 and tell them you need assistance. When they get there have them fill out a report. Tell him you are calling the consumer protection agency with the attorney general of your state. IF you leave without getting what you paid for call the attorney generals office.

Sounds like you went to Obama's Used Cars.

Clinton's lot was a bit more honest. He wore plaid jackets, polyester bellbottoms, sucked unlit cigars, and talked up Ford Falcons as quarter-mile terrors.

Call the police. We've all been taken - you're not alone. Remember - good judgment is earned - this lesson cost you $1,100...

Actually, rethinking my previous post.
You were foolish to go get the car by yourself, I mean really who drives it back.
You were foolish to not take the bill of sale with you.
You were foolish to fall for their “scam”.
And lastly, I doubt your story.

This is my “advice” for better or for worse. Obviously, try to get back your money or get the car but as one Freeper posted, maybe the car was involved in something sordid so maybe not such a good idea.

Don’t beat yourself up over it. We all make mistakes. All of us - some of us get off easier than others. Some mistakes are money and some last a lifetime.

People spend a lot of money to go to college to “learn” and you learned something. Meanwhile, I’ll say a prayer that you get back your $. In my mind, that’s a lot of dough and I’d be heartbroken plus you still need a car, right?

Wish I could help you.
