In honor of John Wooden's 99th birthday, here are 99 things you may, or may not, know about the legendary former UCLA basketball coach:
1. He was born in Martinsville, Ind., on Oct. 14, 1910.
2. Wooden led Martinsville High to the Indiana state title in 1927 and runner-up finishes in 1926 and 1928.

That is right, practice opens up! The REAL sports season begins! Well my huskies are ready to be fired up again to take on all challengers! Both the men and the women! How is your UNC teams?
A far better man, than a coach. And as a coach, few will ever be his equal.
That is why college basketball’s version of the Heisman troophy is named after him.
Despite what the supporters of Forrest Clare “Phog” Allen, Adolph Rupp, Dean Smith or Bobby Knight say, John Wooden is truly the greatest college basketball coach of all time, no contest. This is because of Wooden’s amazing championship runs at UCLA.
My favorite Wooden quote: “do not mistake motion for progress.”
I’m an IU grad. Our team used to lose to his teams regularly. But I’m rooting for him to “go for 100”.
Oh, I don't know; I think it depends on what you mean by best coach. He won a lot of games, for certain, but he didn't contribute much to basketball in terms of changing the game, and he doesn't have much of a coaching tree. I think it's also fair to raise the Sam Gilbert issues, as it is certainly worth noting that Wooden was at UCLA a long time--never winning anything--until Gilbert showed up.
Greatest "coach," at least in terms of changing the game, has to be Hank Iba. The guy invented the motion offense, which is used by nearly every organized basketball team in world. He perfected man-to-man defense, and has a coaching tree a mile long.
why dont you post your pic with John Wooden :)
Whatever! Coach Iba preceeded Wooden and all those other greats in his coaching tree. Wooden is listed in that same tree.
But c’mon 10 national championships in 12 years!
That feat will never be equaled and I don’t care what you say about Gilbert, you are simply wrong, wrong, wrong.
Maybe you should start another thread or two - one for each of your role models. /s
I have a christian devotion booklet half written by John Wooden. Its really neat. He’s a pretty honorable man.
