Is Jason Campbell being spare criticism because of his race?

Once again, the medicore Washington Redskin offense fails to perform against the Panthers in a loss after being up 17-2.

There is plenty of criticism of Jim Zorn, but none of Jason Campbell. There has been plenty of criticism of Tony Romo and lack of winning the big game. Nor was there ever any lack of criticism of Eli Manning.

I am tired of hearing that Jason Campbell has had x number of coordinators in x years. So what, you are a big league QB. You have been in the NFL long enough to know what is required, get the ball down field.

I hate to bring up the subject of race, but living in the DC metro area, there has been no honest debate or criticsm of Jason Campbell.

His numbers so far this year are not bad, QB rating of 90.35.

Eli Manning's is 111.71 and Tony Romo's is 86.45. Donovan McNabb numbers are high, but he hasn't played a lot this year.

Just wanted to know what you all thought of this.

Rush was right about Donovan McNabb at the time. Philly football was killed by all the racialistism for many years as no black QB could ever officially underperform to the Philly Sports Press — which is the nation’s MOST influential sports press on account of ESPN and Comcast.

It’s not NcNabb that makes the best case for that — it’s the whole Randall Cunningham -> Donovan McNabb -> Micheal Vick thang. Philadelphia is where black athletes come to be praised beyond any actual ability.

You just answered your own question. Campbell is a good QB. Definitely not elite, but he's the kind of QB you can win with, as the Redskins have done in the past. This same basic team did go 6-2 last year before a total meltdown.

Washington has bigger problems than QB.

It has nothing to do whether one is a good QB. The question is how much blame should be laid on Campbell and why isn't being laid?

In the NFL, a good quarterback isn't determined by what their physical abilities are, it is their ability to mentally pick up the game at the extreme speed that the game is today.

I always enjoy it when NFL teams have to decide between a QB that wins ugly, and one that "has all the tools" or a "cannon for an arm". ( I seem to remember Bobby Douglass throwing a ball 70 yards in the air with a broken wrist-- but he couldn't throw a ball with touch if his life depended on it. I much preferred Virgil Carter. So much for old Bears trivia...) The ones that come to mind are: Doug Flutie or Rob Johnson, Trent Dilfer or Elvis Grbac, Rex Grossman or Kyle Orton? hh

Two words: Jamarcus Russell.

He was 3-of-19 before leading his one good drive of the season, scoring a TD at the end to beat the lowly Chiefs. He's completed 42% of his passes. Big Ben has completed 73%. Most good QBs hover around 60-62%
He has 8 turnovers and 1 TD. Most QB's try for a 2-to-1 ratio of scores to turnovers.
His 5.0 yards per attempt are in the bottom 3 in the NFL.

Now, most black QB's get a break on their stats, because they add some great rushing stats... but oddly enough, JaMarcus has a grand total of 30 yds this season, with 15 of those coming on one run.

Were it not for Derek Anderson having a horrific season, JaMarcus would be, by far, the worst NFL QB.

What to say about JR. Is he that bad, or is he just in a bad situation, which is compounded by being thrown to the wolves in Oakland.

If JR were in another organization, and had a chance to be a backup, would he turn out better? He’s certainly got the physical tools. I don’t know. But certainly playing for the Raiders is no way to mature as a QB (or as a human being for that matter).

And a lot of great college QBs are unable to make that adjustment in the pros. It doesn't matter if they have a bullet of an arm. It's something you either have or you don't.

Oh no question! The odd thing is that the NFL quantifies everything in player evals but can't seem to get a handle on measuring the speed with which a QB can make decisions. Everybody talks about 'vision' and the 'ability to see the field', but then laments their rookie QB's inability to 'adjust to the speed of the game'.

Then every once in a while an unheralded QB becomes the greatest of his era because he can do just that (Unitas & Brady leap to mind). If somebody could figure out how to consistently identify those guys they could write their own ticket as a GM, Chief Scout or Players Agent.

It would be nice to have the luxury of years gone by to develop a QB slowly. Curt Warner had the advantage of arriving in the league after playing in Europe. Maybe the new UFL will help the next Warner find a way to showcase his 'intangibles'.

Jason Campbell is a good quarterback.

The problem is that there are a lot of great quarterbacks around. There is a good case to be made that we are currently enjoying the Golden Age of the Quarterback in the NFL:

Drew Brees
Brett Favre
Tom Brady
Jay Cutler
Ben Roethlisberger
Eli Manning
Aaron Rodgers
Philip Rivers
Donovan McNabb
Joe Flacco
Matt Ryan
Carson Palmer
Kurt Warner

plus up and comers like Mark Sanchez.

Campbell is a fairly good quarterback, but a lot of teams now are benefitting from having an excellent quarterback.

Snyder would have been better served by spending his money on Jay Cutler rather than Albert Haynesworth.

JR is a bust. I have listened to this pro-scout on FOX sports radio, forget the guys name, but he has always said JR had a reputation during college of not being a hard worker. I think JR should give a couple of million dollars to Notre Dame because it was that Sugar Bowl game that shot him up the draft board. Of course Notre Dame had no business being in a BCS game. JR with his huge signing bonus is happy and does not care about winning or improving his game.

... like consistantly overpaying for free agents each year while allowing the rest of the team to deteriorate. 1 or 2 injuries and all the hype is done.

How about Jamarcus Russell? Or David Garrard? Or Tavarius Jackson? Or Vince Young? There never has been and never will be a black QB in the NFL who can perform at a level high enough to lift their team to win the Super Bowl. Doug Williams was not the typical black QB (he was a pocket passer) and only made it to the Super Bowl because it was a strike season.

42 Super Bowls, one black QB winner. Coincidence?

As a Lions fan, I am also encouraged from what I’ve seen from Stafford. He is making typical rookie mistakes, but he looks like he’s not overwhelmed (I certainly don’t see that ‘deer in the headlights’ look from him), and as long as that is the case, I know the other things are fixable, and he should be a pretty good QB in this league.
