Make a copy of the file before you try anything else. When trying to recover the file you might make destroy it.

Yes make a copy. Then see if you can access the slides in reverse order of how they were worked on and try removing them one by one. You might have added a corrupt file to the project. Most likely the last one that was added or worked on.

Also, you might try opening the document in Apple’s native Office program, whatever that is.
I am so sorry for your loss.
Use OpenOffice going forward.
