San Francisco is asking basketball superstar Michael Jordan to snuff out the cigars, after he was caught on the front page of The Chronicle's Sporting Green breaking the city's ban on smoking on public golf courses.
City officials sprang into action after seeing the full-color photo Tuesday of the NBA Hall of Famer enjoying a good cigar while teeing off at Harding Park's 14th hole during a Presidents Cup practice round.
In an interview with PGATour.com, Jordan was asked how many cigars he planned to smoke during this week's tournament.
"Well," Jordan replied, "that depends, because I heard this is a public place, so they limit what you can smoke. I'm not even supposed to be smoking, but this was a practice round and no one said anything."
If he is permitted to smoke, Jordan said, "I would say (it's) a three-cigar round. I would try to keep it at a minimum of three."
And what is the city's response?
"You mean about Spare the Air Jordan?" said Recreation and Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg.
"I've already sent off an e-mail to the PGA Tour director," Ginsburg said. "It was sort of a gentle nudge reminding them that smoking is illegal and that we would appreciate their support."
Initially, public golf courses were exempt from the city's many smoking bans. However, in 2006, after much debate, the Board of Supervisors narrowly voted to apply the same rules to golf courses as other parks - including the possibility of a $100 fine for violators.
"But don't expect me to ask him for it," said city attorney's spokesman Matt Dorsey.

LOL. There’s not ONE SIGNLE PLACE IN MY STATE where adults can be adults. That’s why the state of Ohio gets no entertainment dollars from this household.
LOL. In Corona, CA about 6 years ago there was a prostitution ring operating on one of the holes of the course, in what was supposed to be a refreshment tent. Now that’s smokin!
May I suggest you look up the definition of the following two words: REGULATION and FREEDOM.
A lady? Oh my...If you say so.
Well, the attitude of those pecksniffs is that you should just stay home.
There is an organization my husband belongs to where there is a serious infight going on. Someone who wanted a specific officer position couldn’t muster enough support to get an even lesser position and now he’s ticked. So, in the infinite wisdom of these types, he is working to get up enough support to have the place go smokefree.
What he doesn’t know is that his alleged “secret” plot is well known and the counter action is definitely not anything he expects :)
What have I said that was not lady-like?
He should have said he wasn’t smoking, he was doing performance art.
That didn’t answer my question, did it?
Look up GOP-Lady in the dictionary...
QUITE A LADY.
Just saying......
You might wish to ponder upon your own tag line a bit when you come onto these threads and make nasty comments. You have forgotten that it is people like you who support the taking from the wallets of those who enjoy things you find disagreeable.
I will not comment upon tobacco tax increases per se, as I’m not sure if you are one of those who support increasing them to fund anything and everything else so your taxes won’t go up, but I can comment upon your propensity for seeking to take from others’ wallets when it comes to your support of smoking bans, including on private property.
Your avowed support of smoking bans in private venues, regardless of where, indicates to me you have no problem with taking another person’s income away from them for no reason but your own convenience. I am sorry to inform you, but the owner of the establishment, while appreciating your commerce, generally had another reason in mind than your convenience for opening said establishment. While your convenience may have entered into the equation for a particular type establish, it was definitely not the sole reason as you would not be the sole customer.
As to public property, especially outside venues -— you have forgotten the simple premise that the person you are forbidding to engage in a harmless activity is also a taxpayer and has paid just as much, and sometimes even more, than you have to utilize that public property.
Again, I suggest you think long and hard about your tag line, and your stance about abusing the money of others.
You go Michael.
Oh please...I won’t be lectured by an addict that put her own baby at risk during pregnancy. Tell us again they was no risk and how it made you feel relaxed.
Hi, Shyla.
Gabz, I’m honored to introduce to you, Shyla.
Gabz - Shyla,

Pleased to meet you tho I belive we have crossed paths here and there ; )
Oh, good! :-)
That’s wonderful.
EXCUSE ME.................I will not be spoken to in such a rude manner by someone that has no concept of what he/she is talking about.
I notice you never did answer my question about the manners your mother taught you. Either she never bothered or you couldn’t be bothered paying any attention to her. Either way, you really should read Emily Post or Miss Manners and learn something.
Good Day
I do believe Shyla is correct, but it is always lovely to cross paths with lovely people again!!!!
I’m embattled with a very cantankerous scanner this evening, and so I must bid you both a lovely evening.
I really need to get this daggoned thing working properly before morning!!!!!!

Indeed, GOP Ladies do rock! ;-)
BTW, I like the way Michael Jordan addressed the issue here. ;-) Cool as a cucumber.
