After watching this movie on Saturday I am sorry to say I disagree with Nugents assessment. I though the best thing about it was its brevity 1 hour 10 minutes long. Maybe the worst thing is that nobody, including the reviewer, seems to notice that Leslie Howards character is a self-absorbed loser. Ingrid Bergmans comely presence makes it easier to take, but I am accustomed to her acting of a few years later when she has improved.

Maybe the worst thing is that nobody, including the reviewer, seems to notice that Leslie Howards character is a self-absorbed loser. Probably because the media back then went out of their way to hide his homosexuality and the fact that he was basically a self-absorbed loser in real life.

The film U-Boat 29 has an actor by the name of Athole Stewart in the cast...hmmm...how exactly is that first name pronounced? (”Thanks, mom and dad!”)

he was basically a self-absorbed loser in real life.He gave up his Hollywood and stage career to return to England at the start of WW2 to work on the war effort, and was killed by the Germans because of that.
