A 74-year-old Lakeland woman was attacked and severely injured Saturday evening by five raccoons, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
The sheriff's office animal control section is investigating.
There is no word on the woman's condition.

Now it is skunk. We don't see them in our yard, but the area reeks of it more frequently than any other place I have lived. Not bad though. The skunks and the raccoons get a bad rap, but then again I keep my cats inside. If I did not they would make me very angry and anxious.

Racoons are pretty tough creatures. Sharp claws.
I have such a bad rabbit problem that my lawn guy said I needed to get rid of them, one way or another. A section of my yard is literally covered in rabbit poop, and has killed all the grass.
Doesn’t explain anything . . . was she feeding them and did she run out of food? I’ve heard stories of wild animals attacking someone who tried to feed them and then had no more food. Animals want to eat till they are satiated and get grumpy if the food runs out.
Recall some child that got goosed by a goose for running out of treats.

The story is sparse on details, and I did not search for other stories. It seems odd that five raccoons would just willy-nilly attack a person without cause.
There is a real nice rural motel I stay at a few times per year. From my balcony at nite I can see dozens of rabbits on their very large rear lawn. It would be a nice shooting spot and I’ve often thought of taking an air rifle.
We have such a huge problem here in my section of the world that is city will supply you/me with traps. However, they say to take the trapped rabbits to a local park about a mile down the street, so, in nothing flat they are back.
Awhile back, I had one raccoon (I thought) that just wouldn't be intimidated in the usual way. I ended up throwing a boot at it. It left reluctantly.
About 15 minutes later, I realized there were three babies in my garage. The dumb things were so scared they wouldn't run out the garage door, they just wanted to hide.
It took half and hour or better to prod them outside.
Not long after, I accidentally shut a young raccoon in my garage overnight. Made a mess and was heck to try to get rid of.
Any advice for scaring them? We had one that came visiting every evening back in the spring/early summer. I had my husband bang his cane on the ground, had our dog going ballistic at the sliding glass door (the ‘coon was hanging to the underside of the deck, about 10 ft from the door), I kept a pile of pebbles near the door to toss at the bugger. He was fearless. I assume he was after my tomatoes (do they eat them?), but I don’t know. The last night he came visiting, hubby got him with the garden hose, right in the face. I felt bad for him, but really hoped that would make him leave and decide we weren’t neighborly...I guess it worked?
He seemed kinda small, maybe he was young, and found his way back into the wild...I don’t know.
One home, when we had just moved in that evening, had a raccoon looking in our glass back door. We started feeding her..and her two babies. Two years later when we moved away, we were feeding 32 of them. They were so funny and each one had their own personality. I would go out onto our deck and sit and feed them animal crackers soaked in milk! They loved it. Besides messing on top of our wooden fence and making a little path from under the fence to our deck, we had very little problems with them, but had unmeasurable entertainment!
I haven’t had that problem. I put out dog food and bread every night and they come and eat. They are pettable if I sit out with them. Very gentle. Sometimes I set up a kiddie pool for them and they are hilarious in there rooting around for dog food.
