Can Boise State really reach the BCS title game?

Boise State's potential to play in the Bowl Championship Series National Championship Game has quickly emerged as the theme that will define the Broncos' season.

Boise State hit No. 5 in all three major college football polls Sunday - the highest regular-season ranking achieved by a team from a conference that doesn't have an automatic BCS berth since the system began in 1998.

Of the four teams in front of the Broncos, at least two will lose because of head-to-head meetings. The top two teams play for the title Jan. 7 in Pasadena, Calif.

I don't really know the ins and outs of how the ranking work but this is how I see it so far.

First BSU has to remain undefeated for the season. Their hardest games are behind them for the season. Now that doesn't mean they are invincible and can't be beat by a lower ranked team, it could still happen. I think with BSU if it does they'll see a further drop than Mississippi did losing to South Carolina.

Looking at the other teams in the top 4 some interesting things will happen soon

#1 Florida V #4 LSU 10/10
#2 Texas V #8 Oklahoma 10/17
#3 Alabama V #4 LSU 11/7

If LSU wins both games that will probably drop both Florida and Alabama below BSU. Top 3 will probably be LSU, Texas, BSU.

If LSU loses to Florida, but beats Alabama: Florida, Texas, BSU.

The wild card comes in there. Depending on the outcome of Texas V Oklahoma game in conjunction with the outcome of the other two games it is possible to see a #1 Florida and #2 BSU.

Problem is that even at #2 the BCS National Championship I believe is reserved for only BCS teams. Even at #2 the best Boise State could hope for is a birth at one of the other bowls.

Lets say just for fun Oklahoma beats Texas. We could have a BSU V Oklahoma Fiesta Bowl rematch.

If they did make it the ratings would be huge. It would be hyped as a classic David versus Goliath match up regardless of their opponent.

The simple answer is -—as it always has been and always will be -—NO. They do not play a schedule that allows the computer to rank them abouve third. Sorry folks the BCS sucks raw eggs

You need to take into account that BSU will drop some if all their hard games are behind them. The computers use strength of schedule and are still 25% of the BCS ranking.

Yeah, possible but highly unlikely based on their schedule.

Boise State took apart my alma mater, Bowling Green State, last weekend. Traditionally, we play ranked schools pretty tight (beat Pitt at Pitt last year, lead Mizzou at Mizzou for much of the game this year). Boise State ran through our defense like we were chained to the ground. That might be the best football team I have ever seen in my life, and I’ve seen some good ones over the past 35 years.

They might be the only team that can match Florida so far as overall team speed goes. It would be a HELL of a match up.

The computers use strength of schedule and are still 25% of the BCS ranking.

This is true, but with that strength of schedule it also looks at how a teams opponents did. BSU fans should be huge fans of the other teams on their schedule (except when playing them of course).

The better Oregon, Louisiana Tech, and New Mexico State do in particular, the better BSU does. The other teams I don't think will boost BSU up as much as these teams will if they manage to win games against higher ranked opponents.

Probably the best outcome for BSU would be for LSU to beat both Florida and Alabama and somehow lose to a Louisiana Tech team that won out except vs. BSU.

The way I see it, there’s a potential scenario for them to wind up being the #1 team on the AP poll and still not get invited to the National Championship. Wouldn’t that be a kicker.

You still have TCU and Houston who are undefeated non AQ teams, and their strenghth of schedule is alot better than Boise St. I would love to see a teamfrom a non AQ conference get into the Championship game. I think that is what it’s going to take for for the BCS to implode, but I don’t see the powers that be letting the little guy dance. There will not be a non AQ team in the championship even if they are the only undefeated team left. You will start to hear all the excuses soon why a 2 loss Florida, USC, Ohio St, or Texas should play. It’s never gonna change, and it sucks.

I agree with what you’ve said. It’s not going to change, at least not anytime soon. I spend most of my attention on the FCS (I-AA) level, because my alma mater is the rated 15th at that level, the games are great, and there’s playoffs. It’s not nearly as big, obviously, but it’s still fun in a stadium of 15,000 watching pure football knowing it’ll all be settled on the field.

I became a fan of BSU when BSU beat Oklahoma in triple (?) overtime a few years ago.

I watched the game to cheer for Oklahoma, but at the end of the game I was cheering for BSU. The Broncos simply refused to loose that game.

Boise against the Bearcats would be massive. I’d LOVE to see that in the BCS title game.

I've been a Bearcat fan since the days of Oscar Robertson (and Greg Cook in football), so, I would love to see them in the Championship game. But, just imagine if Boise and Cincy ended up as the top 2 in the BCS standings. The hysterics, rantings, and screaming would be entertainment themselves!
