Frankly, other than the pricing scheme, the phone home crap, and limits on numbers of times it can be activated, Windows 7 may save M$’s bacon. I’m a big fan of Linux but I’m impressed with Windows 7.

Absolutely delusional. Linux makes a good rescue disk, though.

I currently run a 100% Linux desktop for work. If I have to use a windows only app I can run a virtual server instance and temporarily boot windows to run that specific app. So far, I have not had to do so. In fact, the only reason I can see for the possible need in the future might be to read a visio diagram... assuming that they can’t send it to me in PDF or JPG.

Linux fans see opportunity in Windows 7 changeover”

Sigh.
It's the same old whistling in the wind, unrealistic, open source optimism isn't it?
Just change the name of the Windows version, and we have seen exactly the same headline over and over again before.
A few years back, it was:
“Linux fans see opportunity in Vista changeover”

Before that, it was:
"Linux fans see opportunity in Windows XP changeover”

Close to 10 years after that, Windows still has over 90% market share of the world's desktops,
But hey, you gotta give the open source chaps some credit for trying I suppose. I think that boat has sailed long ago. Best chance the open source guys had was when Vista had these teething problems at launch. Win 7 is another beast altogether. Win 7 is just too damn good to open up any opportunities for Linux to strike.

Meanwhile, some have been humming along on desktop Linux for years. Beyond the desktop, if you've used google, Amazon, or countless other servers then you've used Linux.

My company issues notebook computers to all engineers. In the past year, they have expanded the option to include Macbooks. In every case that I am aware of, engineers coming up on their hardware refresh have selected Macs. For IOS development and in the data center, Linux is the platform of choice.

Give users a choice and they do not select Microsoft Windows.
