I owned two and raced another in SCCA A Sedan Series.

A year ago a friend of mine who is a car dealer took me to a showroom that had a 65 restored in perfect condition. He said, “you remember this car, get in and tell me what you think of it.”

I got in and the only neat thing was that it still had that good sounding door slam. The car, compared to todays standards, is a piece of junk. I hate to say it, but the finish in the interior is bad, the seat sits right on the floor and it just was a bad experience.

My friend saw it in my eyes and started laughing.

We’ve come a long way baby.

My Mother had a Pink 59 Coupe DeVille just like that. She traded up to a Gold 63 Coupe DeVille a few years later (sigh).

I took my Driver's License Road Test in the 63. The DMV guy couldn't believe I was in that 19 foot long two 1/2 ton behemoth. Thank God they didn't require you to parallel park by that time. The Y turn almost did me in though.

I bought a 73 Calais for my (then 16) oldest daughter's first car. It weighed 4850 pounds, had a 502, and could carry 6 in style, and relative safety. She replaced it with a Jeep! Since it was a gas hog, too, it kept her driving to a minimum.

Last summer, when visiting her (now 30), she told me she's looking for another one like it. She doesn't have the Jeep any more. With 2 kids, she's got a Taurus, but longs for the feel of that behemoth!

My Mothers 63 had a 390 with three 2 barrel carbs. When I was 16, I drove to Disneyland with some friends in that car. Got on the freeway, merged into the traffic and looked at the Speedo. I was doing 90 in no time. Scared the hell out of me. That car was a beast.

It hauled Ass. Sometimes I think it was faster than my 69 Chevelle with the 350.

That green vista cruiser at #4 is the car I learned how to drive in when I was 17.

My mom’s, exactly the same color same fake veneer wood. 350 2 barrel just enough to get me in trouble.

A buddy of mine wrapped his Mustang Fastback around a tree. I almost cried when I found out. He was fine, but the car died at the scene. What a waste.

FYI, after the first few Cobras, which were based on the AC Bristol, the rest WERE American made, entirely within the U. S. The design of the Cobra changed over the length of its production, culminating in the 427SC model, a real performance monster, and a pig to drive. Good looking car, tho, and an original Cobra these days is worth 250 grand and up.....mostly up. Only 352 of the 427SC’s were made, but it took the industry nearly 20 years to equal their performance. Wish I had one.......

Pretty! If you’ll check, however, I think you’ll find that’s NOT a “1968 Ford Mustang Shelby Cobra GT 500 KR”. It’s a 1968 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500KR. A Shelby Cobra is an entirely different animal (2-seat roadster), a lot hotter, and worth a Gawdawful lot more today. Lots of people make that mistake, ‘cause Ford DID produce a Cobra model in the Mustang, but it was the Mustang II, not the first ones. Shelby’s Cobras were unique at the time they were built. A rare one - the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe. Only six were built.
