Word For The Day, Wednesday, September 23, 2009 - popinjay
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 09/23/2009

Posted on 09/23/2009 6:20:00 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

popinjay • \PAH-pin-jay\ • noun

a strutting supercilious person

Example sentence:

Shopping was going fine until, in one of the boutiques, a popinjay of a sales clerk clearly snubbed us.

Did you know?
Popinjays and parrots are birds of a feather. "Popinjay," from the Middle French word "papegai," is the original name for a parrot in English. (The French word in turn came from the Arabic word for the bird, "babghā." "Parrot," which English speakers adopted later, probably comes from Middle French "perroquet.") In the days of Middle English, parrots were rare and exotic, and it was quite a compliment to be called a "popinjay" after such a beautiful bird. But by the 1500s, parrots had become more commonplace, and their gaudy plumage and vulgar mimicry helped "popinjay" develop the pejorative sense we use today.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Yep. Boarded up windows. Iron fences along the sidewalks. Lovely city.

Buncha smelly hippies came here in a school bus intent on feeding the other hippies. The police keep kicking them off of private property and they are complaining that they have no where to go.

Go back home. No one asked you to come here.

“Don’t hate my Dad”... ROFL..... I am revolted by her as well - this should be one of those secrets you are too ashamed to ever admit, instead she’ll be all over the tv talk shows discussing it. She wasn’t a child, she did this from age 19 to 29? She’s disgusting

it may be just about the sickest thing i have ever heard! i don’t care how much of any mind-altering substance you have had, she admits to having a realization of it DURING the first supposed act, and went on with it for 10 years! what is the basis for it? of course you love your family, you don’t SCREW Them to demonstrate it. it’s not like either of them could not find a DIFF sexual partner. so WHAT drives this then>?????

Twice yesterday the Oprah was brought to my attention. First by a phone call from a friend telling me what was on the show yesterday and then again last night with a promo for today’s show about this.

When my friend called me yesterday she was lamenting about why the likes of Oprah and Dr. Phil use the most sensational stories about a subject instead of just the every day occurrences that don’t make the media.

I told her to do what I do and not watch the shows and her attitude was that doesn’t do any good we need to write to them and tell them not to do the sensational. She just didn’t understand the fact they do them for the ratings. I told her to stop watching and inform her friends about it and tell them to stop watching. The less people that watch, the lower the ratings. Writing to the show proves people are watching.

Eh, but what do I know..............

I never watch oprah or the view - msnbc, cnn - I occasionally watch local ABC or NBC news just to hear how many more gang members killed each other in the Houston ghetto.. (8 this past weekend!!!) - I dont’ care how old they are either - if they pick up a gun or a knife and go after someone, they can die for all I care.... I did write to Dancing with the Stars to tell them the judge who slammed Sarah Palin was disgusting, but I don’t really watch that show either.

Yes, as Emily Latella.

After being corrected of her misundertanding of such subjects as "making Puerto Rico a steak" by Jane Curtin, whe would say "Oh, that's different. Nevermind." And then she would turn and call Jane a Bitch.

No, just watching the loonies on the news, wondering why obvious questions aren’t asked. Like when a bunch of people come from all over to demand “jobs” why doesn’t anyone ask how they managed to have money to get here to protest.

I also have been wondering why none of the local news outlets (apparently) were smart enough to try to get someone inside one of these rogue “protest” groups in order to get the inside scoop. Last week they showed a door and said that this group was having a secret meeting inside to plan their protest plans. Wouldnt’ it have been, i don’t know, journalistic, to have thought about how to get inside?
