Racist? As far as I know hip hop is not exclusively for blacks when it comes to the audience or performers. Meanwhile last night I attended a benefit for the Salem Jazz & Soul Festival with Barrence Whitfield and the Savages--a great soul/blues/rock band. Most of the audience was white and admittedly older than the hip hop crowd, and it wasn't hip hop music, but Barrence is an electrifying performer and all was peaceful. Barrence--real name Barry White, hence the need to change it to avoid confusion--is a great guy. His music is more my style.

As Howie Carr would say, try not to let this destroy your faith in the integrity of the hip hop community.

Hip hop is full vulgar language, violence, abuse of women, killing and worse. Close the whole place.

Thinking down the road to see how this action could expand... Let’s say Obama, the communist, does something radical and in line with his lack of respect for human life and inspires a Timothy McVeyish reaction. Let’s say Obama and his communuist pals in the media blame that reaction on Howie Carr’s radio show which covered Obama’s radical action that resulted in the loss of human life...

Would the State’s communists try to shut down Howie Carr’s radio show because it is inciting violence and demand it be replaced with happy-happy-joy-joy smoothe music? Yes they would.

The selectmen should have shut down the club, not target the content of the music. If the club is out of control and can not keep order from it’s activity and the town can’t afford the cops to keep order, the club would have to go.

You mean an American town is against deliberately attracting members of the 13% of the population which commits 55% of the crime? Seems impossible, doesn’t it!

Had a friend who bought a club that was notorious for hip hop violence. He changed the format of the club, cleaned it up, etc. So, after success, he decided to have one night a week for hip hop. Yeah, violence in the club and shootings in the parking lot.

Orchid Nightclub is crying racism but ready to comply with a selectman’s apparent demand that they stop playing hip-hop music.

It's not racism. Hip-hop just sucks. When this crap became prominent on radio and TV, outside of classic rock, I stopped listening to American stations. I listen to Pagode, but now like Country-Western. Either way, give me a style of music that's a celebration of life and love, not a romp in a fecal-fest of filth that is "Hip-Hop"

Ivete Sangalo - Beleza Rara

If this doesn't jump start your heart, call and ambulance...

Ivete Sangalo - Culpa Da Lua

Incredibly beautiful jazz...

Does the place have a liquor license? If so, why not just revoke that?

I was at an Arizona library a couple of weeks ago, looking through music CDs. They were organized into many genres: pop, classical, new age, jazz, holiday, etc. Almost all of the CDs were "naked", as it were, without those inconvenient magnetically-releasable plastic shells on them.

The exception: hip-hop.

I'm surprised the ACLU wasn't picketing outside the library doors.

I completely believe in the hip hop community...let's face it, they just don't gun down each other with anywhere near the frequency of places that play Glenn Miller...

I remember some years ago there was a hip-hop nightclub in the Old Sacramento part of Sacramento that caused a LOT of problems, including one ugly shooting. Small wonder why the club closed, much to the relief of the Sacramento Police Department!

“when it comes to the audience or performers.”

Yes, there are a few white hip-hop artists, but they all speak Ebonics and hip-speak. And look at the lyrics - when’s the last time the word “niggas” meant “white boys?”

They are “not” targeting a white audience. It’s all misogyny, hate, and violence.

Just have the town yank their Liquor License. Problem solved.
