CRANSTON, R.I -- Ivan G. Marte, chairman of the Rhode Island Republican Hispanic Assembly, says he has quit the GOP out of embarrassment at South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson's outburst during President Obama's address to Congress last week.
Wilson shouted 'You Lie,' when Obama remarked that illegal immigrants would not receive benefits under his health care plan.
"I do not want to continue being a member of a party in which the members of the party express themselves in that way," said Marte, 59, of Cranston. In a phone interview, he called Wilson's behavior "shameful" and "uncivilized."
But Marte said Wilson's outburst was the last straw in a series of disappointments that led him to break with his party.
Marte became "disenchanted" with Governor Carcieri after the Republican governor sought his advice -- and then ignored it, Marte said -- concerning the 2008 executive order cracking down on illegal immigration. Carcieri's order angered many in the Hispanic community.

This is why I disagree with Romney and other Republicans’ cotinued plea for “outreach” to Hispanics. It is a complete waste of time. They are too infected with political correctness already.
I agree that it does us no harm to have a ‘rat show his true colors and jump ship.
And I think a big, nasty sewer rat is a perfect mascot for the DNC!

Consider it nothing more than a way for people to affiliate as Republicans in their community. It’s no more racism than is it a sign of ‘sexism’ that we have Republican Women’s clubs. It’s also helpful as a way to show that hispanics are welcome in the party.

The fact that Sen Baucus came out on the same day that Wilson was ‘rebuked by the House’ and said this his NEW version of the ‘health care bill’ had stronger language in it to prevent illegals from getting coverage should show you the fact that Wilson was telling the truth.
Perhaps not handled in the most PC manner, but I personally am sick of truth being hidden behind PC ‘behavior’.

I am Hispanic and I don’t understand why the GOP has to have a Hispanic Assembly. Do they ONLY do things for Hispanics? Isn’t something like this a sign of the racism that REAL conservatives are trying to get rid of? I want a party that looks out for AMERICANS! Black, Brown, White... I DON’T CARE WHAT YOU ARE! Real Americans need a voice, and not a voice for one specific group.”

Careful. the libs accused (wrongly) the GOP national convention of being just that. too white. such a group would be very helpful to the Dems in keeping minority voters on the Dem plantation.
I can tell you that Hispanic Assembly groups and meetings are open to anyone to join. So are other groups. Maybe we need ... Irish-heritage Republican Americans .. the IRA!

I would agree with everything you said however... I read the mission statement of the GOP Hispanic Assembly and one of their goals is to increase the number of Hispanic elected officials. Now I have NOTHING against having Hispanic elected officials, but to me that sounds like a special interest group more concerned about their overall mission then putting true conservatives in office. If it happens to be a Hispanic individual with true conservative values then GREAT! But to me it sounds like race comes before values with any group like this.
