I recall seeing Tony Bennett “sing” something a while back. It was terrible. A vocal version of Hugh Hefner.
A buddy of mine saw The Who in Las Vegas a few years back and came to the same conclusion about Daltry’s voice. Time really does catch up with all of us, and boy howdy does it suck when it does.
Interestingly (or not) one of the guys who has kept his voice strong into his later years is Ian Gillan (Deep Purple among others). He probably doesn’t have the 4 1/2 octave range of his prime, but he’s still got the pipes, fer sure.

It’s interesting (or not) because he was one of the first rockers to incorporate “voice belting”, a technique mostly associated with more classical forms of music. It seems to have helped preserve his chords.

Daltry had already lost his voice at this concert in 1999.
I saw Zeppelin in 1977 and Plant was horrible. Couldn’t hit any of the high notes. Someone else told me on that tour he was ok, so maybe he just was sick or something. But working with Mark Stein of Vanilla Fudge, that guy can still hit ‘em. A few years ago, he did a charity event for the rescue dogs of 9/11 and sang America the Beautiful as well as Ray Charles ever did.

It’s torture. Daltry sounds ... just.... awful.
Another rocker who *has* kept his voice almost in the same pristine condition of 40 years ago is John Fogarty. He’s pretty remarkable.
Unfortunately, Fogarty’s politics suck. Oh well.

Elton’s range has dropped at least an octive. Maybe he’s had throat problems...
He had throat surgery a few years ago.

I saw Elton in middle school for his Yellow Brick Road Tour. Unbelievable show. He was in his wild outfit and platform shoe phase.
I saw him again about 10 years ago. So disappointing. His songs were redone to fit his limited range. No high notes.
I’m so glad I saw The Who when I did...back in the late 80’s. It was clearly the best show I have ever seen.
... and she is still behind her Foster Grants.
