Question for FReeper gearheads:
I have a beloved '97 Mustang V6 automatic. The speedo and tach work just fine, but both odometers have simultaneously ceased to advance.
I am used to British Leyland/ Morris Garage vehicles wherein a cable ran from the transmission case to the back of said devices. None exist on the Mustang, just an electrical connection/wiring to a 'speed sensor' on the housing.
What do you think has failed? Please apply Ockham's razor. Has the speed sensor likely failed, or is this a ghastly remove the dash and replace the speedo/tach assembly?
Many thanks for your advice.

Many thanks for your HELPFUL advice, as this is hugh and series.
If the cost/effort to replace the speed sensor are relatively modest, swap that out first and see if that fixes it.
Well phine. Looks like a dash-out job to replace a $.57 gear.
Thanks for the link!!!!
Thanks. That link is specific to the GT. Mine is an LS convertible. But I appreciate a connection to the site and I’ll crawl around there for goodies.
LOL those gears are priced at 25 DOLLARS apiece. I am gonna try another source ;-)
Many thanks! The dash assembly came out quite easily, and indeed the main drive gear had reduced itself to crumbling putty.
I ordered the gears from an outfit in Bossier City, LA. $39.50 plus $7 shipping. Ouch! But a lot better than $500 at the Ford dealer.
Once the gears come in, it’s about a 30 min total time to repair.
Once again FReerepublic comes through!
Cool!
Your muffler bearings are shot.
And so are the cyclic hemorrhoidal gears on the camber shafts
