Getting rid of expanding advertisements on web sites
Bill Ingram (Me) (Myself) & (I)

Posted on 09/15/2009 12:50:56 PM PDT by jongaltsr

I spend much of my time trying to read news articles and visit various web sites that have these new (expanding) advertisements.

Some have click out boxes others do not. I spend a lot of time trying various techniques to get rid of those ads so that I can read the articles I am researching.

Is there some technique to make them disappear?

Better yet - Is there someone who one can complain to to get rid of that style of ad? Many are subscription only and I see no reason to subscribe just to complain that I can't read the information due to those ads.

Firefox and Opera both have ad-ins that will block Flash content (the most comment type that these ads are written in). The downside, you may not see the Flash content you want, such as videos, but you can always turn that feature off.

Post a URL with the type of ad that you want to block. I’ll try it and see if AdBlock works.

http://adblockplus.org/en/

What browser do you use?

They are hideous, but I have never figured a way around them. I figure that the newspapers must have at least some form of revenue for my time spent reading. I just live with it and move on.

You won’t see hardly a one if you use Firefox and the Add-on called “Adblock Plus.”

My problem with “NoScript” is the very intrusive way it has to run, making everything be clicked on to work.

At least AdBlock does it silently, without any intrusion.

What ads?

As others have said....Firefox and the add-on called “Adblock Plus.”

This is not a flash ad.
Is is an expanding ad on that page.
It is page based

bttt.

Best way to view FR is Firefox with AdBlock and NoScripts.

Use a separate browser without cookies and privacy mode for just f*rting around.

Use another browser for bank access etc.

Flash is generally the program that is used to write the ad. Flash isn’t just cute animations, it actually is a pretty powerful programming tool.

I had a good ad blocker installed in my IE browser for awhile.

I don’t recall exactly what it was I had installed but it took the URLs for common ad sites and blocked them and their content outright. I’d get “page unable to display” errors within those small boxes where ads (including flash ads) were supposed to display but the rest of the page was fine.

I could add or remove URLs from this block list.

It wasn’t targeting popup launches, it blocked the content.

I haven’t ever encountered ads or scripts running on FR. Could it be browser hijacking that leads you to suspect such content on FR?

Or are you referring to click throughs to the MSM pages to read “full” articles?

Like another poster has mentioned--I use Firefox with AdBlock Plus and NoScript.

I get nothing but content. I haven't seen a popup in years. I'd forgotten they were still around.

agreed that no script can be a bit annoying, however there are some scripts that I permanently block and don’t worry about.

I trust very few sites to runs scripts

It’s the click throughs. Not the FR content.
