Message from the Director: New External Advisory Board
Statement to Employees by Director of the Central Intelligence Agency Leon E. Panetta on New External Advisory Board

September 9, 2009

Last Wednesday, I hosted a group of distinguished men and women who have agreed to serve as members of CIA’s External Advisory Board. The Board was briefed on the substance of our work, from counterterrorism and counterproliferation to cybersecurity and the war zones. They came away impressed with the work that you do and eager to help CIA become even more effective in accomplishing its mission.

As informal advisors to me and other senior leaders of our Agency, Board members will visit periodically and offer their views on managing this complex organization and its relationships with key customers, partners, and the public. They have a wealth of experience in fields ranging from security and diplomacy to lawmaking, business, and academia. Several served on Director Hayden’s advisory board.

Members include: former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright; former Representative Dan Glickman; former Senator Bob Graham; former Representative Lee Hamilton; Vernon Jordan, senior managing director at Lazard Frères; Arnold Kanter, principal and founding member of The Scowcroft Group; Jeong Kim, president of Bell Labs; General Richard B. Myers, USAF (Ret.); former Undersecretary of State Thomas Pickering; former Senator Warren Rudman; Harold “Hal” C. Smith, vice president of Computer Sciences Corporation; Jeffrey H. Smith, partner at Arnold & Porter and former CIA general counsel; H. Patrick Swygert, president emeritus of Howard University; and former Presidential Advisor for Homeland Security Fran Townsend.

Each brings a commitment to public service and an understanding of the role of the CIA and the secrecy our work requires. Their backgrounds and perspectives will help ensure that the CIA is making the best use of its resources and authorities. The focus is, as it always must be, on positioning this Agency to meet tomorrow’s national security challenges. The Advisory Board provided strong support to the work of the CIA and encouraged all of us to continue to stay focused on protecting the nation.

I would ask everyone to welcome and assist the members of the Board as they follow all you do for our country. I’m confident that we will benefit from their advice, and I thank them for their support and their willingness to serve in this important capacity.

Leon E. Panetta

I guess calling them vicious al Qa’ida terrorists is PC in DC. No mention of their Muslim faith, Jihadist aims, etc.. This will all go away if we simply morph into whatever Muslims want, and then we won’t need the CIA. Meanwhile Our Glorious Leader still hasn’t found a church to go to on Sunday. One wonders why.
