Cat Fancy! Meet the Top Breeds
PawNation.com ^ | 5/1/09 | Staff

In our "Top Dogs By City" story, readers sang the praises of their favorite breeds: "Our pitbull is amazing; I'll never own another breed," said Tiff. "Why isn't bassett hound on the list? You can't get a more lovable family dog than that!" argued Solomeeo.

Cats, on the other hand, don't get the same respect. Instead of being called out as loyal, lovable or clever, kitties are most often described as aloof and independent. But don't dismiss pedigree! Just as in dogs, breed can help determine a cat's personality. American shorthairs, for example, are affectionate; sphynxes are known mischief makers.

Established in 1906, the Cat Fanciers' Association culls an annual list of the most popular cat breeds based on kittens registered each year. Persians, the breed that took the top spot in 2008, have been the most registered breed for decades. The Exotic, who many describe as the lazy man's Persian, overtook the Maine coon to strut into the number two spot. And Oriental shorthairs, with a selection of over 750 colors and patterns, continue to lock in 10th place.

If you could get Sarahcuda to take one, it would be the textbook definition of an EPIC WIN!

Does your Maine Coon swim? Many of them do.

Cute, cute, cute! I have a ragdoll and she is the BEST! Same coloring as your first pic. They have awesome personalities - excellent companions and love interacting with their humans. Thanks for the great pix.

I agree with you about Ragdoll breeders. We have a great one here in San Diego, too. Toby is the only cat that doesn't even try to bite or scratch when I give him a bath. He just lets me bath him. So cool!

Absolutely gorgeous creatures.

My whatever-she-is is a beautiful cat, possibly a Birman-tabby mix, but not very cuddly. She’s window dressing till company comes, then she up and vanishes.

I love my two little “mutts”. I rescued them when they were feral kittens. Litter-mates. Loving sisters. And they treat me like I hung the moon. Now they are 5 years old and they are still the sweetest creatures God has ever created.

I have 3 from the same family. They are all sturdy, muscular and heavy. I’ve had others from this family and they are the same. I have another cat that I took in from my best friend when she moved (others backed out at the last minute) and she is thin, light and flexible. I don’t know what kind she is but she is blue/grey.

Breeds? I think all my kitties are mutts with some breedish traits. Even my Rocket is not pure blood Maine Coon, I’m pretty sure, and besides, he’s a runt.

My cats are all doing well, and we’re legally changing Miss Hissy Slashy’s name to Miss Pet Monger because she’s getting that lovey these days.
