Cat Fancy! Meet the Top Breeds
PawNation.com ^ | 5/1/09 | Staff

In our "Top Dogs By City" story, readers sang the praises of their favorite breeds: "Our pitbull is amazing; I'll never own another breed," said Tiff. "Why isn't bassett hound on the list? You can't get a more lovable family dog than that!" argued Solomeeo.

Cats, on the other hand, don't get the same respect. Instead of being called out as loyal, lovable or clever, kitties are most often described as aloof and independent. But don't dismiss pedigree! Just as in dogs, breed can help determine a cat's personality. American shorthairs, for example, are affectionate; sphynxes are known mischief makers.

Established in 1906, the Cat Fanciers' Association culls an annual list of the most popular cat breeds based on kittens registered each year. Persians, the breed that took the top spot in 2008, have been the most registered breed for decades. The Exotic, who many describe as the lazy man's Persian, overtook the Maine coon to strut into the number two spot. And Oriental shorthairs, with a selection of over 750 colors and patterns, continue to lock in 10th place.

Let's hear it for the Ragdoll!

This is my little guy, who is now 2x this size and he's still under a year old!

This is the most lovable, cuddly kitty I've ever had the pleasure to serve!

I love your babies! I have only one Ragdoll (see above post) and you’re right, they do shed some but not nearly as much as my others. It may be because my little guy is only 9 months old now. :)

Aren't they fun?

This photo is of my Anna...who always looks like she's pissed off, but is the most lovable creature.

She's about 12 years old now...this was taken in 2004

Toby is almost 12 lbs at 9 months. He is so sweet and docile. He hugs me just like my kids did when they were little. Cracks me up!

Unfortunately, he bathes as often as a ten year old boy....almost never! LOL

Where I come from, those are known as “Red Cats”. It is said that Red Cats are a tribe unto themselves. I have a 14 lb. red barn cat. He’s a lover and a fighter.

Fine looking cats You have there. Stay safe.

Regards,
AR

For only a split second my first thought was that the cat just vomited on your stairs... < /humor >

At my home I would be bringing out the Bissel Little Green Machine if this was on my stairs...

Ragdolls RULE!!! Your cats are beautiful!

I had my dear departed baby Allegra Jayne for almost 11 years. She was a gorgeous seal point Ragdoll. She passed away June 19, 2009 from renal failure. My heart is still broken. In a couple of weeks, I’m getting a seal lynx kitten. Ragdolls have the sweetest disposition. I love them!!!

Yes, Ragdolls do shed. As much as I would vacuum, the hair just kept on coming. Everything I owned had cat hair on it.

My cat looked just like these. Of course he's 3 years old now, but he was the runt of the litter and had a little mouse like face so I named him Stewart Little. Even though he was the runt, he was the first one to climb up on my bed and jump off. Landed face first, shook it off and went to see what other mischief he could get into. He absolutely stole my heart.

If anybody is thinking of getting a ragdoll, the breeder you choose is very important, IMO.

You can expect to pay $600 for a ragdoll with papers.

The breeder we dealt with is outside Rochester New York. FReepmail mail if you want more information.

Drove all the way home with her...she didn't make a sound.

mutts, be they canine or feline are the best....

For the most part, I would agree with you, but we had a pure bred German Shepard that the parents were trained seeing eye dogs and that dog was the only dog I truly loved (being a cat person at heart). That sweetheart was mostly an indoor dog, but seemed to be aware of it's presence and never broke anything in the house by it's hi-jinks. It loved to sit in your lap even when it was too big to do so. But, let anyone threaten his family and he was a tiger.

That’s the only way to pick a cat...let it pick you. Your tuxedo looks like 2 of mine :)
