Cat Fancy! Meet the Top Breeds
PawNation.com ^ | 5/1/09 | Staff

In our "Top Dogs By City" story, readers sang the praises of their favorite breeds: "Our pitbull is amazing; I'll never own another breed," said Tiff. "Why isn't bassett hound on the list? You can't get a more lovable family dog than that!" argued Solomeeo.

Cats, on the other hand, don't get the same respect. Instead of being called out as loyal, lovable or clever, kitties are most often described as aloof and independent. But don't dismiss pedigree! Just as in dogs, breed can help determine a cat's personality. American shorthairs, for example, are affectionate; sphynxes are known mischief makers.

Established in 1906, the Cat Fanciers' Association culls an annual list of the most popular cat breeds based on kittens registered each year. Persians, the breed that took the top spot in 2008, have been the most registered breed for decades. The Exotic, who many describe as the lazy man's Persian, overtook the Maine coon to strut into the number two spot. And Oriental shorthairs, with a selection of over 750 colors and patterns, continue to lock in 10th place.

That was a Barf Alert, for sure. I’ve seen both of them on TV and it was all I could do to keep from spewing.

I have two orange toms, both I have rescued.
Actually, all but three of my cats are rescues.
While Siamese are my favourites, the rescues are much sweeter.
Your kittens are adorable, and I would take one in an instant.
Thanks for the ping slings and arrows.

They're flat our wrong about the ragdoll...which deserves to be on any list. THEY DO SHED. Like crazy. Perhaps they may have meant "matting", because we never had a problem with that.

They are amazing cats. They will race you up and down the stairs, right under your feet. Here are mine...

Baby as kitten...

Baby grown up.

Hangin’ tough! Got a grandson over there somewhere, and I miss him a lot.

I got yellow ribbons everywhere, and I’m even making “yellow ribbon” bracelets. I like making them and it makes me feel like I’m with all y’all!!

Take care of those little orange fluffies! They are so cute!

I’m very glad. Alaska, huh? Is Sarah Palin down for one?

LOL - one of my fellow cat-rescuers lives in Alaska and has already warned her husband back there that a couple of orange cats will be arriving sometime in the near future.

We'll have to see if Sarah wants one. These are special Operation Iraqi Freedom souvenir cats. (We're doing a marketing blitz Mama Cat she had FIVE of 'em.)

The white feet look like they may have some Birman in them.

But they sure do look precious!!

They really are. I have a special place in my heart for the orange ones.

My petite calico is only affectionate on HER terms and HER time.

However, her 18 pound lard-lad orange tabby son only needs a mere glance in his general direction to merit his everlasting adoration

I love "Cat Fancy" magazine. Great articles and ads on exotic breeds as well as homegrown favorites.

For those who think cats are aloof and a-social, I can tell you from experience, that the secret is this: raise a few cats from the same litter, with their mother, and you will be rewarded with a bunch of friendly, cuddly, congenial cats with intense loyalties.

What fun!

My orange kitty - Ruby. Don't let the cuteness fool you. She's a mean one, but only to other cats.

Do not believe what they say about Sphynx cats. They ARE cuddle bugs and love to ride around on your shoulders. They are also vixens who open cupboards late at night (every night) and leave throw rugs in a heap over and over and over. They do not shed, but they do expect you to keep blankets around in the winter so they can be kept toasty warm.

Maybe we could domesticate the wild ones

Actually Baby is a blue-mitted ragdoll...Anna a lilac mitted.

I was surprised to read in WIKI that nobody is sure of the bloodline. A genetic mutation...but an upper deck grand slam of a breed.

My petite calico is only affectionate on HER terms and HER time.

I had a calico and she was exactly like that. I called her "The Princess." She didn't tolerate her orange housemate's antics very well, either. He loved to antagonize her just for the sheer hell of it. LOL

My calico (Dulcie) passed away in late 2007 - she was diabetic and went into insulin shock. Her caretakers (in my absence) rushed her to the vet, but they couldn't save her. RIP Dulcinea.
