Actually any of us could “shun toilet paper” for a year with no difficulty ... re-using garbage (last years phone book) would do the job just as well as the old Sears catalog did 100 years ago. I didn’t read anywhere that he actually did without some method of cleaning up. The only drawback would be a little wasted time in working the paper a bit to soften it before use.
