It was only a week ago that CBS Radio moved the famous WBCN call letters from Boston to Charlotte, onto WFNA-AM (1660). Now, the plan will be to end the sports simulcast between WBCN & WFNZ-AM (610), launching Americas Talk on WBCN on September 14. That will pose direct competition for Greater Medias market leader WBT-AM/FM (1110/99.3).
The Charlotte Observer says the new format will feature a conservative lean, including syndicated talkers Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity, along with former WBT host Jason Lewis, now in syndication. WBCN operations manager D.J. Stout tells the paper, We feel that Charlotte has never really had an alternative when it comes to news talk. Americas Talk on WBCN will have a huge hurdle to leap the powerful air signal of WBT, which broadcasts with 50-kw, supplemented by WBT-FM at 99.3. While WBCN stands at 10,000 watts daytime and just 1,000 watts at night, up in the AM expanded band. The Charlotte Board of Radio-Info sniffed out a test webpage of Americas Talk on August 28, and the storys been developing since then.
when the sun goes down you can listen to WBT1110AM from Canada to Cuba. 1660am has a alright signal during the daytime but in the evening it sucks.
Good ole WBT.
