JERICHO, Ark. It was just too much, having to return to court twice on the same day to contest yet another traffic ticket, and Fire Chief Don Payne didn't hesitate to tell the judge what he thought of the police and their speed traps. The response from cops? They shot him. Right there in court.

Did the judge and jury make time for the murder (or assault if he didn’t die) case that happened before their eyes?
That would be a great chance to show that there REALLY is a right to a speedy trial. (I’m off to read the details now.)
A thread with a few comments on this story here:

In this instance I wonder what will happen if a fire breaks out at the police station or a cop's home?
And to think, federal grant money made all this possible!
Whole world’s gone insane.
Sounds like an example of a town that shouldn’t be a town.
More Guns, Less Crime - John Lott

Someone told me that in the early days of cars, police officers didn’t want to be traffic enforcers because the antagonism with the public would hurt their ability to serve the public.
Sounds like this town’s police force exists as a graft organization to prove that assertion true.
Upon reading the WHOLE story, I have to say it’d be fine with me if the citizens killed these abusive mobsters and that was that.
{I’m not feeling very merciful right now.}
Some people need killin. You sure it wasn’t in Texas?
Google Jericho, Arkansas, select maps, then choose satellite view. 7 cops for this podnunk wide spot in the road is the height of stupidity.
The police department should not only be disbanded, they should all be in jail, awaiting charges for a) attempted murder, b) assault with a deadly weapon, c) conspiracy to commit murder, d) public mayhem.
Now, after the shooting, the Police Force is suspended by the Chief "until things cool down", and the county Sheriff department is able to patrol the town just fine?
They should have figured this out a long time ago.
Sounds like these 7 guys had really cushy jobs with a good bit of relative power. Then they had to go kill the goose that laid the golden eggs.
Well, back to doing productive work and not writing tickets to support their salary.
me thinks that the Police chief, mayor, judge, and cops got some splanin to do.... an it will probably be to the feds they will be talkin!
Here’s what must be one of the great legal understatements of all time, from the attorney representing the victim:
“I know that he was unarmed and I know he was shot,” Fishman said. “None of that sounds too good for the city to me.”
Google New Rome, Ohio. Same story until the Ohio legislature disbanded the town.
It sounds like a racket... good grief!
Rule of law only works when the laws are somewhere in the vicinity of reasonable.
People can’t stand for this sort of tyranny.
