Wolves Beat Dogs on Logic Test

Wolves do better on some tests of logic than dogs, a new study found, revealing differences between the animals that scientists suspect result from dogs' domestication.

In experiments, dogs followed human cues to perform certain tasks despite evidence they could see suggesting a different strategy would be smarter, while wolves made the more logical choice based on their observations.

In fact, dogs' responses were similar to human infants, who also prioritize following the example of adult humans.

if humans are the nanny state in this scenario, then dogs are just wolves on welfare.....

It would be interesting to see a logic test for sheep. I am guessing the sheep would obtain near identical scores with the American Liberal.

Who to ping for dogs? ping.

Blessed if I know - that list's changed ownership more times than a subprime mortgage. Let's see if any KPL'ers know.

How did the chickens make out against the squab?

Catz and goggies are just little humans in disguise, as the article suggests! Wolves, now...yah...

We had one last November. The sheep failed. Miserably.

They really are. All this experiment suggests to me is that the dogs were more interested in pleasing the human than finding the object.

Wolves have to survive on their cognitive powers. If they can’t reason, they can’t survive.

Goggies will bend over backwards to please their Humans! And they are SO forgiving of our human frailties. They love us, regardless.

This does not surprise me, wolves are smarter than dogs.

Dogs are basically inbred dumbed down wolves.

That’s what domestication is, you pick the most obedient ones out of the litter. And in general, the smarter an animal is the less obedient it’s going to be.

Even the barking thing. Adult wolves do not bark, only wolf pups do. Dogs are basically wolves that are stuck in the infantile stage mentally, which is why even adult dogs bark.

I was looking for the Far Side that had one wolf near a fire with some cavemen, while other wolves at a distance say “Look at that glassy stare, those vacuous eyes... He’s been domesticated I tell you!”

People will probably jump to the conclusion that wolves are smarter than dogs but that’s not what this study says. In fact it points out a flaw of all such studies i.e motivation.

For dogs and babies, learning and cooperating with humans/adults is a more important (survival) task than getting “right” answers.

Oh for gosh sakes. If the dogs obey the humans, they're smarter, but if the wolves don't obey the humans, they're smarter?

They should make up their minds.

Any dog worthy of the name knows how to get humans to do whatever he wants them to do by using the Soft Sad Eyes, the Head Tilt /Quizzical Look, the Barely Audible Whine....Wolves, poor things, have to use their brains. Dogs , especially small cute ones, can get what they want by bending humans to their wills.
