At his living room table, 92-year-old Rochus Misch shows me some of his old photo albums. Private pictures he had taken more than 60 years ago. There are colour images of Mr Misch in an SS uniform at Adolf Hitler's home in the Alps, snapshots of Hitler staring at rabbits, and photos of Hitler's mistress and future wife Eva Braun.

For five years, SS Oberscharfuehrer Rochus Misch had been part of Adolf Hitler's inner circle, as a bodyguard, a courier and telephone operator to the Fuehrer.

Rochus Misch spent years as part of Hitler's inner circle. Photo Rochus Misch "My first meeting with Hitler was rather strange," Mr Misch recalls. "I'd been in the job 12 days when Hitler's chief adjutant, a man called Bruckner, started asking me questions about my grandmother, about my childhood.

"Then he got up and walked towards the door. Being an obedient soldier, I flung myself forward to open it, and there was Hitler standing right behind the door. I felt cold. Then I felt hot. I felt every emotion standing there opposite Hitler.....

An excellent movie to rent about this subject is the German language film “Downfall”. It is very realistic and it is told through the eyes of Hitler’s personal secretary, Traudl Junge, who passed away recently and witnessed his final days in the bunker.

Wow. Thanks for posting.

I don't believe Misch when he says he didn't know of the scale. He knew enough to be afraid for his life. Even if he could do nothing to stop what was going on in the war outside of his walls, he watched and did nothing as six children were murdered in front of him. How does he sleep at night?

I can't sleep at night just knowing that Obama sits in the Oval Office with the potential to become a monster like he whom Misch served and protected.

Yeah, but did his leg tingle?

That was hilarious. The actor Bruno Ganz captured Hitler’s persona brilliantly and accurately IMHO.

Funny. But how does "Mein Fuhrer" translate to "Mr. Hitler" (in the subtitles)?

Yes and they had a several week window to break out of the trap, but Hitler insisted on holding out at all costs. During the battle of Stalingrad Hitler was routinely given injections by his quack physician, Dr. Morrell, which no doubt impaired his judgement.

he also did not want to surrender the city named after his opponent. WW2 has always been a minor hobby of mine. i have read extensively on the subject and find every new facet of information fascinating. another good Euro movie is Europa EUropa - probably not as accurate as some of these films but a pretty good movie nonetheless

I, too, am a WWII buff. Never heard of Europa, though. What is it about? Is it also a foreign language film?
