Exercise Minimizes Weight Regain By Reducing Appetite, Burning Fat...

Exercise helps prevent weight regain after dieting by reducing appetite and by burning fat before burning carbohydrates, according to a new study with rats. Burning fat first and storing carbohydrates for use later in the day slows weight regain and may minimize overeating by signaling a feeling of fullness to the brain.

The University of Colorado Denver study also found that exercise prevents the increase in the number of fat cells that occurs during weight regain, challenging the conventional wisdom that the number of fat cells is set and cannot be altered by dietary or lifestyle changes.

These coordinated physiological changes in the brain and the body lower the ‘defended’ weight, that is, the weight that our physiology drives us to achieve, and suggest that the effects of exercise on these physiological processes may make it easier to stay on a diet.

Oh my, I didn’t realize that....I’m so glad someone spent taxpayer money figuring this out.

I had no idea...

I wonder if they will study if the amount of food eaten dictates your body size, I’ve been curious about that too....

Wonderful groundbreaking research.....

I jumped into walking routes at work. I walk about 14 miles a day average. So far, I’ve discovered I don’t have much appetite, and if I do eat lunch, I wish I hadn’t. I cannot drink soda, and I’m losing my desire to drink tea. Ice water.

When I get home, I make myself eat. I’m not hungry. I’m very surprised about all this. I thought I’d be starving.

Now, where’s my huge government grant to pay for this intense research into exercise? Surely the check is in the mail....

I think whether exercise makes you hungry or not depends on the type of exercise you’re doing, and perhaps the weather may have something to do with it as well. We all certainly feel hungrier in cooler weather.

I exercise, quite a bit, different types (Aerobic, Anaerobic, mix), and I have to say that my appetite is all over the place post exercise. Usually, however, immediately after exercise, my appetite is low. I have tested this out during dieting, if I get cravings, I'll go out and jog a bit. Kills the craving, for a while...

There are other tendencies though. If I perform a high intensity anerobic exercise (Weight lifting), my appetite will go low for a while, but then I will get hungry for carbs, pure and simple. A moderate routine will simply blunt the appetite for a while, without the cravings for carbs later. Light exercise (aerobic), will usually blunt the appetite for a while, then it will go back to normal.

So I think post exercise appetite will depend on several factors like exercise intensity, duration, and state of hunger before engaging in the exercise.
