Weeks after rejecting a Democrat-backed fee proposal to keep state parks open, the Schwarzenegger administration is proposing shoppers be assessed a 25 cent fee for each single-use paper or plastic bag up to $2.00 per transaction to pay for a variety of state recycling efforts.
Requiring stores to charge and remit a fee for the distribution of single-use carryout bags will help the state and local governments to offset the environmental and social costs of single-use carryout bags, says a summary of the idea which, sources say, has been discussed with members of both the Governors Office and the Department of Conservation, which oversees the state bottle and can recycling program.

I think a surcharge is silly but I love my reusable bags. Used ‘em for years, I can fit a week’s worth of groceries in about 6 bags instead of 20 plastic ones. Less trips to and from the house carrying it all in and they are much more comfortable on the hands if it’s heavy. Plus they can be used on vacation for towels and bathing suits, odds and ends, at the beach. I take mine everywhere I go - nothing annoys me more than bagging a gallon of MILK!!
Better yet, why won’t the Hollywood elitist chip in $ 1 million each to help out the state.
Arnie...If I washed my @$$, would you kiss it?
They aren’t single use in this house. The plastic ones make great trash can liners, aluminum can storage, and are very useful by the litter box. I didn’t know they still had the paper ones.
Is it a fee or a tax? What if I buy my own plastic bags at Cash and Carry?
He is the worst governor ever! He makes California long for Gray Davis, he’s so bad!
Only if you stick a dollar bill to it/sarc
In Germany, the only store that ever gave bags for “free” was Wal-Mart and you had to ask for them.
Germans would take their own bags, baskets, etc. with them to the store. You could also buy plastic bags for 10-20 cents by the check-out counter at some stores.
A fee unless you’re on foodstamps.
“Provide for an exemption of single use bag fees for customers participating in the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children or the Food Stamp Program. “

I have no problem with the store sellig the bags of their own volition. The state forcing it to raise money is entirely different.
We reuse bags for trashcan liners and lots of other uses.
I do have to question the wisdom of re using bags for groceries however. Carry home poultry in them once, and produce the next trip will have consequences.
This smacks of the sugar tax and the stamp tax that finally po’d the Colonies to declare this country a Republic. Kalifornia should secede, that would fix a lot of problems for them and for us.
I do the same thing. They make great beach bags and they can pack in nearly every case all the groceries I need in one trip. The same goes for Wal-Mart as well.
The funny thing about this is that they are planning on bringing in revenue from this when it will drive more people to either use reusable bags (or skip bagging altogether).
It’s a simple truth - if you want less of something, you tax it.
A breathing tax?
A walking tax?
A sidewalk bench tax?
A bus stop tax?
Chat room tax at 1 cent per 100 words?
Come on people the poor Californians are so undertaxed we have to help them!
If the state wants to conduct “recycling efforts”, why the hell don’t the state pay for them? The people are already taxed enough.
Stupid. Maybe I will shop exclusively at Costco from now on.
They don’t give you bags for anything.
The only thing this will do is drive down plastic bag use. There won’t be a revenue increase.
Of course, then they will say revenue did not meet expectations but, we have reduced the use of plastic and that is good for the planet, good “for the children”
I think Arnold’s head is wrapped in a plastic grocery bag thus the reason he’s not getting enough oxygen to his brain. Arnold—go console Maria and STFU.
“Come on people the poor Californians are so undertaxed we have to help them!”
I find the cabal we have in Sacramento very taxing.
