there used to a rule that the guy had to physically report to the new team by 1159pm on AUg 31 to be eligible for postseason .... must no longer be in effect ... but 9/1 is here and it is a big day for roster transactions.
If you go to Cooperstown, there is a display where someone for one of the leauges wrote in by hand the 1 Sept deadline for post series play in the letter agreeing to the first meeting of the AL and NL champs.
Sorry to see Thome go. He was well liked here in ChiTown.
Well, the “physical report” to the Dodgers for Garland is no problemo — it’s just a stroll across the infield. The D-Backs are in LA tonight. Glad to get rid of Garland. He is no good. He will probably be Cy Young for the Dodgers, though. I’ve seldom seen a more inconsistent pitcher — witness his 4.6 ERA.

the transaction must have been finalized, but not announced. vin mentioned it during the broadcast tonight somewhere about the 7th inning.
I have been saying this for years but this kind of “open wallet” purchasing of players whether through the waiver route or free agency is an abomination. We need to see a playoff system like we find in the Little League World Series where the rich market teams are bracketed together and they then play the winner of the medium and small market teams bracket.
I grew up eating,sleeping and dreaming baseball and I never imagined myself saying this but I watch less and less baseball all the time.
We still miss him in Philly, too. Too bad there wasn’t a place for him here after Ryan Howard came up. What a potent 1-2 punch that woulda been!
That's all sports now. I used to watch any and every NFL game on TV in the late 80's and early 90's. Now with free agency and salary caps, no team in any league can stay together. Expansion hurt every league too. The NHL is at least 6 teams too big, and they're talking about putting a team in Las Vegas?? I miss the dynasties--Steelers, Cowboys, Niners, Oilers, Islanders, Penguins, Celtics, Lakers--when sports was great!
My question is...will Thome get more playing time than he did in Chicago? Being in the NL he loses his DH status...I hope this doesn’t kill my fantasy numbers now.
Jim has some injury issues but his bat is ridiculous this year. I just don’t get the attitude early this year that he is “too old”. I am so sick of people giving baseball players 10-12 yrs and that’s it. Some of our best players lasted 25 years.
Jim Thome was great in Philadelphia until his last year here when he got hurt and the Phils had to bring up some minor leaguer to play 1st base. The new guy turned out to be pretty good, though, so the Phils traded Jim.
When Thome finally returned to Philly with the White Sox he got a long standing O.

By today’s standards, a 4.60 ERA is Hall of Fame material.
the rule is still in effect and Thome showed up in person before midnight local time. So it’s a go.
