Onslow County, NC -- A baby had all the toes of his left foot chewed off by a Pit Bull, according to the Onslow County Sheriff's Office.
Lawmen say the baby could lose his foot.
The mother said she never heard the baby cry out and only discovered the injury when she went to change the baby's diaper Monday morning.
Sheriff's deputies say the mother, Robie Lynn Jenkins, and her boyfriend, Tremayne Spillman, were taking care of the 12-week-old Pit Bull for a friend, after the friend was arrested Sunday night for possession of a firearm by a felon.
"Ms. Jenkins said she placed the 4-month-old victim on a foldout couch in the living room," reported the sheriff's office. "Ms. Jenkins said she and her boyfriend slept in the living room on another couch. She said her two other children were in the bedroom. As for the dog, he was unrestricted and could go throughout the house."
The mother told officials she never heard the baby cry out.
"Ms. Jenkins said she was taking medication and never heard the child cry out and only discovered the incident when she started changing the childs diaper," the sheriff's office reported. "The child was transported to Pitt Memorial Hospital. Medical authorities indicated the child may also lose his left foot."
Both Jenkins and Spillman are facing felony child abuse charges.
“Ms. Jenkins said she was taking medication and never heard the child cry out”
Likely meth.
You know every time I see the words “Pit Bull” I automatically think of you Chet.
Congratulations on such a successful word association, lol
Self-medicated, perhaps?
The article is filled with so many things that should be alarm-sounding for anyone with any sense of morality, decency, and especially Christianity. Throw in an unrestrained dog and gee wiz...
Convicted felon with a gun and a pit bull. A mother zonked out on ‘medication’.
Pit Bulls and their keepers.
UR BEBEH HAD A FLAVR.
“The child was transported to PITT MEMORIAL HOSPITAL”!
Pitt Memorial Hospital? Oh, Yeah! SAFE NOW!
I remember a similar story coming out a while back involving a puppy. Puppies like to chew, and prefer things that move when they’re that young. Why are parents so idiotic? Even if this dog had been a labrador, the results might have been the same. Keep pets away from babies and you won’t have tragedies like this. I won’t even let my cats around a baby.
“Pit Bulls and their keepers.”
Should be “idiots and their dogs”
I just saw another thread on this, and they were saying the dog was a year old on another news site! And everyone just eats up whatever they feed, because you can trust the media to report all the details just as they are...
The people are the only ones to blame here. The picture obviously shows a very young puppy.
To any thinking person, this story only reinforces the fact that this is a people problem, and not a dog problem.
Even if this dog had been a labrador, the results might have been the same.

Ever read or heard about a single case of a labrador retriever chewing the toes off of a baby, to the point where the baby may lose the foot?
I haven’t.
This situation involved a puppy doing what they do best, chewing. This is not an attack any more than any other puppy chewing something they shouldn’t is an attack. If you have ever been around a puppy you would see that especially labs, which are very mouthy, it will chew on your hand, fingers, toes, whatever it can, for as long as you let it.
There are plenty of incidences of labs biting children’s faces that are full grown. They just don’t make national news like other breeds do, but I can pull some stories up if you like.

_______________
LOL. Let’s see. 2 dogs in my house, 2 in my son’s and 2 in my daughter’s. Not one of them is over 4. 2 retrievers (duck toller, lab), border collie, aussie shepherd, and 2 husky mixed breeds (you know, what we used to call mutts).
Before the 2 in my house currently, we had 3 (all had to be put down in a very sad 8 months in 2007) a golden, another mutt and a beagle.
so yes, I know a thing or 2 about pups, and never, and I do mean never, have any of the dogs I personally have owned, nor have I heard a single story ever, about retrievers chewing off the toes of a baby, such that the foot may need to be amputated. I’d love to see your sources of that.
I never said I had stories of other dogs chewing off body parts of babies. What I DID say was that other breeds ATTACK children, especially the face, and that this was a puppy that was not attacking someone, but chewing, as puppies do.
This incident is extremely rare. The fact that the owners were probably high on something SHOULD be what jumps out at a rational person. Of course in the vast majority of instances, a parent will be sober and aware if their child makes a distressful noise, and if it happens to be a puppy trying to chew on its toes or fingers, the parent should be able to stop it before any damage is done. Who has a baby where a dog has access to it anyway? I can understand if you are in the room, but why leave a child so vulnerable?
On a side note, sorry to hear about your dogs. What a horrible thing to have happen.
Hate to break it to you, but last year a black lab puppy killed an infant:
