The files are on the DVD. You need to use the Windows FileManager to find them and copy them (Start>MB3 My Computer > Explore. Then click on the little DVD icon under “Devices with Removable Storage” (XP)

I normally change the preferences so Windows/XP/Vista doesn’t hide stuff from me. The help system should tell you how to navigate/copy files etc. Basic stuff.

You could try Google too. It’s really fun to look under the “hood” a little. Go for it—this could be the first step towards becoming a power-user!

Wow! 4.7 GB!! People who intend to copy (personal) DVDs to their computer need to understand how much memory they take up. 4.7 GB/per is a LOT of memory.

200 will fit on a 1TB drive and that drive is around 100 bucks now.

Wow how drives have fallen. I got a 500 GB for 100 or so just about a year ago and you can get it for much less now.

But that would be wrong.

Actually, that depends.

There are plenty of legitimate reasons to rip a DVD.

Yes, it is. Even leaving aside whether "space shifting;" i.e., copying files from a personally-owned CD to an MP3 player, say, is fair use (not entirely clear), there is no room for such arguments under the DMCA. The DMCA prohibits breaking the encrpytion, even if you have legal rights to what's inside.

And we should care why?

“And we should care why?”

WHY? Here’s WHY ! ! !

If copying spreads, commie actors, producers, directors, ad nauseam, who are part of Hollyweird won’t be able to support Obama and the commies, that’s why.

Do you want Obama to have to go back to ‘community organizing? How can he afford vacations at Marxist Vinyard on such a meager income? ?

He’s doin’ it fer the chilrun, his chilrun.

Where can listen to your music? Always looking for good music. Country gets too commercial..some songs that are “hits” sound boring!!! There is a Christian Station in Indiana Pa and I happened on it while working and liked the sound. One of my favorite Christian songs is cartoon by Cris Rice!!!

Not if you use it for personal use.

Yes if you use it for personal use.

Almost all commercial DVD's use CSS encryption.   The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (which your Rep probably voted for, mine, Dave Camp did) specifically prohibits any circumvention of copy protection, EVEN if use of the subject is clear Fair Use.  Satire, political commentary, security research, backup of expensive kid movies, doesn't matter, if its encrypted with CSS, then you can't copy it.  Yes this means that your Fair Use rights can be completely trumped by a private commercial entity.  No, nobody of any relevance cares.

Unless you are doing it for selling the DVD or giving it out to friends, put online etc., there is nothing wrong with copying a DVD you own to back it up, even if it requires breaking the protection.

I really don’t give a flip what the law says. They aren’t going to come after you for burning a personal DVD.

Except it puts parents such as myself into the uncomfortable position of trying to rationalize following some laws but not ones we disagree with to kids that become savvy enough to know about the DMCA.

I've never been one to buy into the cynical "We have the best politicians money can buy" school of thought, but the DMCA's passage and continued existence has really challenged my faith in our legislators.

And we should care why?

You can care or not care; but if the MPAA decides that it wants to start suing people that have broken the DRM on its dvds, you could very well find yourself amongst those that are sued.

As I've said before, the relative merits of the DMCA are not a part of this debate. If you circumvent the DMCA, you are breaking the law and you can be sued. If you don't care about that, that's cool.

Good point....that would be a conundrum for parents.

Using AnyDVD you can also rip blurays into .iso but that’s going to be about 50GB.

You can rip the content of a movie into a divx file. A typical 90min movie is about 700MB.

Thanks! Sounds interesting. Never heard of it before, but I’ll try to figure it out. I found the following website for downloading something that appears to be what you referred to. Is it the same?

http://www.divx.com/en/products/software/windows/divx

If you don't care about that, that's cool.

Sometimes the law is an ass and deserves to be broken. Wish I could get on a jury in one of these cases.
