Massachusetts would be well-served if the law is changed to allow the governor to appoint an interim senator while the election of a successor proceeds and thus the state will not lose a voice as critical legislation comes before Congress. There would be no better and deserving choice for the interim position than former Gov. Mike Dukakis.

Dear Mr. Rust: Liberalism is a mental disorder. Your letter makes a good case in point.

--Richard, I think your brain is rusty. Since when are citizens "well served" by having their right to vote on representaion removed from them? (centralmass)

--If the law is passed and Gov. Deval Patrick does appoint Michael S. Dukakis to the interim seat warmer position the irony is unavoidable and almost laughable. It will be one unpopular governor filling the seat with another equally unpopular governor from 20 years ago. It will cynically prove that things haven't changed very much. (newshen)
--We have benefited from having a legislature that is 90% DemocRATic? How? Don't we have one of the highest, if not the highest, tax burden among the 50 states? How does that translate into a benefit of any kind? Aren't our legislators only slightly behind those of Illinois and Louisiana when it comes to scandal, fraud and deceit? How does that benefit us? (meme)
