Germany then proceeded with the “reply”, but instead of using paper, she used the European landmass to write it in.

August 25 headline: "Hitler Acts . . ."
August 26: "Hitler Reported . . ."
August 27: "Hitler Demands . . ."
August 28: "Hitler Tells . . ."
Today: "Hitler Gets . . ."

All full-page, eight-column heads. It looks to me like The Times is stuck in a rut. Tomorrow breaks the pattern though. Hitler will be the second word instead of the first.

“All I want is Peace...Peace....Peace,
A little piece of Poland, a little piece of France,
A little piece of Portugal, and Austria perchance.
A little slice of Turkey and all that that entails.
And then a piece of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales.”

One thing that sunk in with today’s story, and I recall the same thing several days ago: When it comes to foreign policy issues, Herman Goering is the one that shows up to participate. Rudolph Hess hasn’t been mentioned. It appears, even at this early date, that he’s been marginalized, and the Goering is the functional number 2 in the Reich. Sheds a slightly different light on his later trip to England. He may have been suspected of having leanings toward England even pre-war.

In a few days Hitler will give a big speech at some important occasion and will publicly name Goering as his heir and Hess as next in line after him. I glanced through "Third Reich" looking for Hess references during this period and found that there are surprisingly few throughout the book. He seems to have kept a low profile. Especially as compared to Hermann G. According to this source Hess' flight to Scotland hit Der Fuehrer as a complete and devastating surprise.

It points again to the miscarriage of justice at Nurenburg as to Hess.

Later in the war Himmler would be #2.

The Nazis originally envisioned an alliance with England; when they were rejected by the British, they acted like a spurned lover, and Britain became the focus of their hate. Von Ribbentrop originally was an admirer of Britain, but ultimately became a rabid Anglophobe.

I’ve probably mentioned Homer_J_Simpson’s excellent series of posts/ping list from the NY Times before, but since we’re 2 days short of 70 years, it seems like a good time to mention it again.

Another 3 row headline starting with Hitler. He was getting pretty famous. I love the old format besides those annoying headlines. I guess those were for those walking by the news stands, it called out to them...

I’m sure it was what the news boys were calling out too
