I was in the yard with my sons yesterday and heard this plane fly by several times. It continued to take off and land repeatedly. I figure that someone was practicing their landing an take offs. I live very close to the airport and drove over to snap some pictures. Any guess of the make of this fine aircraft. You tube link here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F--oNoIK5aQ
Actually, I was saying you were correct. LOL
correction to post 83: This aircraft is NOT an Electra Model 10. The model 10 had twin stabelizers. Sorry about that. DC-1 could be a candidate.
I always contact ATC with: "Cessna Businessliner N195**.." they think I am a 400 series twin...when I appear as a polished cantilever (strutless) monoplane with a radial engine it kinda surprises them...:o)
Try this link.
About the only time you'll see one now is at a show like Oskosh...
Very cool! I'd never seen that site before...especially like the embossed panel layout in the background....:o)
I think it is great that you live near a small airport and instead of being unhappy about it, you encourage your sons’ interest in general aviation. Boys and girls who become interested in aviation tend to set goals for themselves, stay out of trouble and develop their imaginations.
Unfortunately, most airports are not as accessible to the public as they once were. My wife and I live on an airpark (a small airport with a 116 homes built around it) with our Skypup ultralight airplane, 1969 Piper Cherokee, and several hang gliders. After 911 we were all grounded for months despite the fact that no credible threats to national security have ever been attributed to small general aviation aircraft. Afterwards the government required access to the public be restricted and security measures be put in place. Most of this is nonsense at least from a national security point of view. It makes me sad because we really love general aviation and like to share our interest with others. I am glad to see that there are plenty of fellow aviation enthusiast Freepers.
Correct...actually both Beech and Cessna made similar airplanes in the advanced trainer catagory....The Beech was the venerable Twin Beech or AT-11/C-45....somewhat comparable to the Bobcat but was larger and more powerful with PW Wasp Jrs. of 450 HP each...
You said a mouthful....911 ruined everything as far as I'm concerned....aviation will never be the same...even general aviation. The California desert municipal airport I own taxiway property on is fenced and gated....gone are the days when you can walk out on an airport with your son or daughter and look at airplanes....very sad....
I enjoy seeing the different makes that fly out of the airport and right over our home.
Most people complain of airplane noise...kudos to you!!..:o)
“I am glad to see that there are plenty of fellow aviation enthusiast Freepers.”
Well, let’s see. Libertarians/conservatives, guns, planes, individual responsibility and all of the independence that goes with such a philosophy. Yup, that all fits together at FR.
You’re in the right place. :-)
I have a friend that is building an airplane and I hope to go for a ride once he has finished. He is a computer programmer and has a young family so I imagine his project will take a while to get off the ground.
It was that sound of this one that captured my attention. I just knew it was a vintage craft by the sound.
I love old aircraft, but when you're busy and you're trying to keep your pattern tight, an assumption on airspeed capabilities that later turns out wrong, can really get a lot of people in a jam.
Don't take it personal, but my faith in the FAA ain't what it should be.
Yes most confuse the two...but they are actually quite different...one all metal (Beech 18..except for control surfaces) and one welded tube and wood construction....one with two vertical stabilizers and one with a single fin....
PS If I ever win the lottery I'm gonna buy the best H-18 money can buy! One still a taildragger...and with radial engines...(some later versions were converted to tri-gear and turbines and even single tails....)
Nothing like the sound of a radial engine...why I fell in love with the 195 as a kid and have owned one now for 15 years...:o)
somehow I knew you'd say that...:o) All they ask for is type...and I can keep up with anything in the pattern so believe me it's never an issue...
