He also cleared up what used to be called “purple haze”, which was rumoured to be not as good as orange sunshine but rumoured to be very cool stuff. He says that his name for it was actually “Monterey purple” but of course we all know that calling it purple haze was inevitable.

Thanks for the name I never knew that, it clears up some mysteries, especially why that field sank in quality so quickly around 1970.( I get the impression that he had stopped producing by then)

Owsley was quite a critter. Still is, actually.

I was living in New Jersey during that period, so anything that made it out to the East Coast had been handled a lot. But Owsley's products were always distinguished.

I believe he established a quality standard that none since (other than the US Government USP-grade LSD-25) has approached.

Also a standard for chutzpah -- claiming 300,000 doses were for "personal use". Now that's balls.

1970 was a turning point.
That was the year the hippies I knew gave up using LSD and started growing their own pot - and experimenting with selective breading. That was the year most hippies disappeared and the streets were overrun with “freaks”.
