That time - years ago - when John R. fiddled about with ‘Search’ and gave us the drop-down box with keywords, title, yahoo search and so on; I suggested he make an easy fix and have the function default to titles inseard of keywords.

He said “OK - No problem”.

As you see - it must have been a “problem”.

I quit making suggestions and ideas. Since what they do makes things worse....

Better to keep quiet.

I don’t know diddly about HTML. Never use it.

But I know how to format for paragraphs by using the ENTER key, and how to post links by cutting and pasting. In other words, I just type in this nice little box and hit “Post” when I’m done.

FReepers with superior knowledge may have better posts than mine, but the current software works just fine for us novices, too.

"Sigh...

Please, go reread what I wrote. I have no problem with HTML. I have written HTML for a living."

Since I had not seen John R rewriting any FR code since you posted the original suggested change I made a rather simple suggestion.

Sigh....

Yes, that's why it's not a problem for you. It's a problem for those of us who do.

A suggestion so simple that it doesn't in any way address my problem, and indicates that you don't even understand what the problem is.

You started the thread, so I addressed you:

"Find a good & free HTML and text editor. Keep it open at the same time and filled with your favorite HTML snippets and images."

It was not intended to address the problem of HTML experts like yourself in any way, shape, or form. Far be it from me to provide advice to you.

It was a general suggestion to others who may want to explore HTML and use it when posting on FR.

I'm sorry then, but you should have made that more clear, because since it was addressed to me, I kind of assumed that it was directed at me. It would have been better to address it to someone who claimed not to know HTML and wanted to.

It shouldn't have to be all or nothing.

No, it shouldn't. That's why, if you use Firefox, you should download the add-on for Xinha Here! and use it -- it's similar to WordPress options, and it's not that difficult to learn. (Press "Post Reply," right click on the reply box, and select "Open Xinha Here!")

And yes, it's annoying when comments are lacking simple HTML codes for quotes.

If we’re going to change the code, let’s ask for the Holy Grail-the ability to edit your post after it’s posted.

Negative. Fro two reasons (at least):

1. Some folks have tried to deny that they posted something. The lack of edit keeps them honest.

2. Think of all the great posts that would have been edited (dumby and the like).

I found that trick by accident. Enjoy.

That would be a nice fix, and a huge enhancement. The one that I am suggesting would be much simpler, though less useful for non-HTMLers.

I’m pretty sure we should Ignore This Post...

I'm with you. I've been using only 3 basic HTML tags since 2000. Ain't that much of a thing.

sigh... <rolleyes>

I guess I don't care if you get your <em> pablum as-long-as the rest of us don't lose all the html coding to trade down.

Lists, formating, tables, etc. and the html character entities, which it looks like you use also, these are things I and others use all the time.

Since I use them automatically when I write, the simplistic code you suggest is redundant and useless to me.

<p>I don't see a problem in leading paragraphs with a p-tag, like this one. I consider it akin to leading a paragraph with an indent. The reason it is not automatically performed is because sometimes HTML that is reposted from other sites has blank lines that are not paragraphs. This would screw up the formatting.

<p>But I think I can make a compromise. If the post formatter does not find any p-tags then p-tags can probably be safely inserted. But there are other considerations, I can't just go willy-nilly tossing <p> between blank lines, because in some contexts (such as within <pre>) a <p> is invalid.

<p>Will probably defer this to the next generation formatter I am currently working on (and off again for the past month.) Next version allows YouTube videos, has better link handling (pushing everything through the redirector), allows a subset of CSS style rules, and outputs compliant XHTML. It's a little more strict than the current formatter, however, breaking fancy bastardized tables-as-decorations, for example.

Thanks, John, I'll look forward to that in the next version.

Thanks! as always, FR is evolving along with the net and a world gone more than a little crazy, since 2006 especially.

More bells and whistles coming? OH Joy! (Just offering that up for a few likely to chime in for a return to FR2000 format. ;-])

As long as we can still use HTML if we choose to for formating. :) I don’t mind other tags being added at all. (Just my $0.02)
