Hmmm....I’ve used lids for longer than that. I think it’s a conspiracy started by the people that want to sell you more lids, LOL!
When you hear the ‘ping’ of a jar sealing, no matter how old the lid, all is well.
I would imagine they’d wear out or get damaged eventually. Some people use new lids every year.
Your call, and I’m sure others will chime in with opinions on this. :)
You’re saying you reuse yours? My wife uses new every year.
Or does the two-year thing mean “lying around unused in a box” for two years, like the little rubber piece dry-rotting? I bought up a bunch of extra lids last year at the end of the season, just because they were marked down to practically-almost-free. Dry rot never even crossed my mind UNTIL NOW. Thanks, I think.
That 'ping' is one of the most beautiful sounds in the world. I love to hear a counterfull of cooling vegetables or fruit start to ping. Kind of like the thrill of popcorn starting to pop only better...much better.
I never reuse lids that have been used to can before but those that are left in the box should be fine forever as long as they aren’t expsoed to water or extreme heat that could cause them to degrade. I also have a vaccuum sealer so I’ll keep lids that have been used for canning and use them to seal things that go into the fridge. I just keep them all separate.
