I’ve used AnnualCreditReport.com in the same manner that you do. But that does not give a credit score, just the report.
FreeCreditReport.com will give a score, but you sign up a service that is free for the first 14 days or something. Cancel the service before those 14 days are up and it is free. They’ll give you the full court press to keep you on and get your money, but you can cancel.
By law, you can get a free copy of your credit report from each of them, once a year. Under certain conditions, you can get it more often.
But to get the free one, you should go here:
https://www.annualcreditreport.com/
All of of the reporting agencies also offer a combined "3-in-1" credit report, which compiles information from the other 2 credit reporting agencies. But, you'll have to pay for that.
Go directly to the reporting agency. Ignore all the other "free credit report" offers, as they generally require you to sign up for a credit monitoring service for a monthly fee.
Actually, credit monitoring might be a good idea, depending on why you want your credit report. I've paid for monitoring since my birth certificate was stolen from my family's home.
After you choose which one you want a report from, you are taken to that site, and they give you a chance to pay for that, if you want to.
freecreditreport.com gives you a credit report sure, but if you read the fine print they charge 70 to 80 dollars per month, and they make it difficult cancel.

is much better. Get your credit reports from each of the three reporting agencies, no credit card number required, and it’s free each year.

I don’t have television. Not since 1998.
Well, I got that part right :-)
