Hey Freepers, I need your help if any of you web experts have the time.
I want to build a website. I have:
--a macbook pro, purchased from the libs at Apple 2 years ago.
--a godaddy.com domain name registered, as well as their free hosting
--new version of iWeb
--a tentatively built iWeb site
I want to:
--update my site often and use it as a blog
--allow comments if possible
I wonder:
--should I get a different web host? Every one I've looked into seems to have several comments disparaging it for being a rip off/ scam etc. Godaddy.com seems safe enough, at least for now, but I'd love to know of a better one.
--what's the deal with FTP and Cyberduck?
Thanks for any and all help, FA

Just go to
Blogger.
They'll handle the details and
as you learn more tech
you can always get
more complicated later.
Simple is better.
From looking around,
it looks like many of those
"Alaskan bloggers"
are "just" Blogger sites
and they are influential.
Simple is better.

Going to google blogger is very good advice.
If you want to learn how to create your own web stuff - get a job doing it. They will pay you for learning as opposed to having to pay your own way!
lol..

FTP "file transfer protocol?" is what you'd use to load lots of files to your site all at once. You build the site on your own computer, get it the way you like it, then upload it using FTP.
When you edit a file on your computer, or create a new one, then you use FTP to replace the old file on your server with the new one.
I use CuteFTP and love it.
Have fun!

You don't need iWeb at all if you just want to blog and allow comments. Any decent ISP will already have blog sofwtare installed or ready for you to install. Try
here, cheap, reliable, good support, but not the fastest.

Here is my two cents:
1) Use Joomla (it's free)
2) Use a site that offers Apache and MySQL;
3) Use the Joomla plugins that are geared to Blogs.
It's really powerful software, it's free and you can do dang near anything with it, including blogs.
Freepmail me if you want to discuss further.

Check out “Swordmaker” posts to all the Mac users here on Free Republic. On those threads, you’ll see the Macintosh users show up and you can probably ask a few there...

Going to google blogger is very good advice. It's good advice unless you are publishing anything critical of Obama. Remember last year when the pro-Hillary "PUMA" Blogger sites were blocked by Google. The gay-critical MassResistance blog there has also been messed with.

InMotion Hosting is where I moved after the Yahoo debacle. GoDaddy sucks.
wordpress.com is also free and far better than blogger - which I tried years ago, same for typepad and some others. Google I would not trust - especially if you have problems you cannot fix yourself.
WordPress is found on most hosting services, is far easier to learn and more flexable than Joomla.

Check out StratoCentric
web site hosting. In the interest of full disclosure...I own the company. We target mostly brick and mortar businesses, but I can make an exception for a fellow Freeper. We don't overcrowd our servers and my cell phone is listed on our site, so feel free to call me any time with questions regarding your site...etc. The posts about the blog scripts are correct. You can load them automatically via your cpanel interface. Also, if you need help setting up your domain / email / etc...let me know. WillyD
